AFL is still second to Ruby League in NSW and Qld anyway.
AFL is usually shown on Ch 7mate in NSW and Qld instead of Ch 7 because it rates so badly.

Honestly AFL coverage from the media is well behind the NRL on radio, television & news papers/digital media in NSW & Qld.

Then you look at State Of Origin in Melbourne. Twice they got a bigger crowd than any AFL match ever played in NSW or Qld.

No back peddling, the point that seems to have gone over your head was that Australia didn't take rugby to the world stage. Naturally with 13 NRL teams and only 4 AFL teams in those states NRL would get more coverage and I couldn't even tell you what channel rugby is on in Victoria. Melbourne is the sporting capital of Australia for a reason and by the way the AFL holds the record for stadium attendance.
