Richo's vision: 22 rounds, standalone Origins, more Tests and World 9s circuit

Richardson has called for

A reduction in the number of NRL matches to 22 rounds;
All three State of Origins to be standalone events;
The establishment of a World 9s circuit, and;
A detailed international schedule.

Agree with SoO being stand alone - playing teams with their stars out I feel takes away from the NRL competition.

its has some character to it,

i would perfer 4 more teams and 19 rounds
Stand Alone Origin
and x 3 more Internationals than there are now.

(but i cannot see them cutting 5 rounds from the premiership)

I think the talent pool is already thin to add four extra teams but yeah can’t see them cutting games.

Rugby league set to reach China as World Nines spreads wings

A GROUP of Chinese athletes is set to learn rugby league, training with NRL clubs as the game continues to spread its wings via Nines Football.

Former Balmain and Newtown coach Paul Broughton has arranged a true World Nines tournament in Samoa next October including China, India and the USA.

The Prime Minister of Samoa has backed the tournament in Apia next October, which could be a breakthrough for league on the world stage.

Samoa tournament for minnows a first step towards landing big fish of India, China

Samoa's Prime Minister Tuilaepa Sailele Malielegaoi has announced a World Nines tournament to be held next October in the capital, Apia, backed by Chinese money and played in a Beijing-funded stadium.

A Chinese team will compete in the three-day event, as well as an Indian team, two nations with little background in rugby union and none in league. Teams at the World Nines will play for the Confederation Cup, and it has been sanctioned by International Rugby League. It is open to both men's and women's teams.

Nines is seen as a perfect vehicle for countries with little history in the traditional 13-a-side game. A delegation from China signed several agreements with the Samoan government last month, including funding for the tournament, but the announcement was delayed until Friday’s ceremony at the historic Aggie Greys hotel in Apia.

The tournament excludes past or present NRL or Super League players and is designed to grow rugby league in developing countries. It is an initiative of rugby league’s oldest and most passionate active official, 88-year-old Paul Broughton: the former chairman of the Titans, special projects officer under John Quayle at NSWRL, coach of Balmain and ex-Dragons player.

NRL headed for Big Apple trials

INew York City’s rugby league team wants to some big-name exposure

New York City’s rugby league team wants to some big-name exposure
By Dean Ritchie

Start spreading the news — NRL teams are set to play trial games in New York early next year.

The star power of Russell Crowe’s South Sydney, Hugh Jackman’s Manly Sea Eagles and Val Holmes’s North Queensland Cowboys have been targeted to take on the groundbreaking New York rugby league franchise in the Big Apple.

New York has been formally admitted into the English rugby league’s third division — a move that will forever change the game.

New York will play in the 2022 League One competition – division three – but next season will enter the famous English Challenge Cup, which includes all Super League clubs.

To prepare for the Challenge Cup, New York have formally invited NRL sides — headed by the Sea Eagles, Rabbitohs and Cowboys — to contest trial games over three successive weekends next February.

Manly will be asked to play a trial given Hollywood star Jackman’s high profile in the US and affection for the Sea Eagles, while Crowe’s Rabbitohs also hold enormous appeal for New York officials. Crowe has long advocated rugby league in America.

New York’s management are aware Holmes attracted headlines during his short stint with the New York Jets NFL franchise.

“We would look to play NRL clubs in February on the weekends around the Nines tournament,” New York chief executive Ricky Wilby said.

“Obviously our preference would be Souths because of the Russell Crowe link and Manly because of the Hugh Jackman link. There’s also the Roosters, Cowboys, Melbourne.

“We would want the teams to come over for a week and play us at the end of that week and then fly home the following day. We would have already played one round of Challenge Cup – possibly two — by the time the NRL sides arrive.

“Straight away it would open us up to that Australian expat market in New York. It would also be attractive to our players. How often would they get the opportunity to play against NRL teams?”

Melbourne, Sydney Roosters and Brisbane will also be considered because of their success and profile.

A formal launch in New York will be held on Monday when the draw for next year’s Challenge Cup – held annually since 1896 — will also be released.
