I agree. Participants is a dodgy number but the AFL do break this down and I think you’ll find they do so into registered players, school players, Auskick etc . I think registered players is a better mark to go by for both codes as it shows who laid down the money and fronts up each week (although cricket Australia may have put a spanner in that one). Anyway, what you can’t deny is that Australian Rules is s major code that is widely played in South East Queensland and definitely growing, particularly with the new women’s competitions springing up. That’s a whole new market and a whole lot of new players to accomodate.

I think that figure could be right if you throw in all the Auskick and school clinics and such which is why participants, line RL “experiences”, is a rubbery figure at best. I think you just need to look at a football to be included. It is the registered players, the amount of teams, and even possibly new or expanding clubs (mudgeerabar springs to mind) that is the sign of growth .. and 27 new grounds as well although that is Gold Coast and northern nsw.
