The financial plight of the Greater Western Sydney Giants has been laid bare after it was revealed the club received two loans from the AFL totalling $2.5 million in the space of a year on top of a $23m grant from the sport's governing body.

In documents submitted to the Australian Securities and Investments Commission, the Giants logged a $1.985m loss for the 2018 reporting period and said they remained "economically dependant on the continual support of the AFL" to survive.

i think they are growing, however, very slowly. This is hardly surprising given how long it took the Swans to become popular in Sydney, and the fact they are the 2nd AFL club in Sydney.

However, they wont be financially independent for many years given how expensive it is to run an AFL club and compete with rich clubs

how else will a brand new expansion club compete with established mega-rich heartland clubs? I dont see the issue if they require financial backing as long as the competition can afford it. the alternative is to not expand at all or rely on a wealthy benefactor who could very well pull out at any minute
