Sydney AFL going down the gurgler - and quick!!!!!

After decades of being at or near the top of the fumbleball tree it appears the Swans are finally slipping down the ladder and into obscurity in Australia's biggest and greatest city. It's not a surprise after being propped up by fumblehouse with the big freeby otherwise known COLA being stripped off 'em in recent years.

Here's a few prominent takes from the article below:

"Just 29,780 people turned up at the SCG on a perfect night for football – the worst attendance figure for a derby at Moore Park in five seasons."

"the Giants did not have significant representation in the stands, despite the fact they are shaping as genuine premiership contenders again this year." Which begs the question where were there 27k 'members'? Oh that's right.....that's just a lie lololol!!!!!!!

"I think, again, it just shows you how difficult the Sydney market can be."

So lets see what happens from here. If the Swans do bottom out for a few seasons, as predicted, home crowds will be as sparse as the former Blacktown mob. Reality will set in. Beatup will retreat to the jungle full time. Gilty will be working overtime spinning positive propaganda.

I think it is fairly usual regardless of team or code that where form drops so do crowds. But yes, how much. And nearly 30000 being considered a disappointment shows expectations are high.

Well this never seems to happen to the Storm funny enough. They're second on the ladder again as we speak. They've missed the top 4 only twice since 2006 and once was because of cheating penalties.

I for one am happy to see the swans take their turn out of the 8

Reality check: The swans average just shy of 30k per home game despite performing very poorly this year with 1 win from 6 games. The highest Sydney NRL club has a crowd average of 20k. Sydney clubs play numerous local derbies, the Swans only 2 for the season.

We dont put up horrendous crowds in our own heartland .

We have every right to crow about crowds and you have no right

Was thinking exactly the same thing reading Terry’s OP.

Fair dinkum... Terry sure is special. Fancy suggesting just under 30,000 crowd for the Swans vs Giants is considered dire in his mind.

Tv ratings are still going ok.

it is only early in the season though.. if the trend continues be interesting in 10 weeks or so..
