Is because it is a costly sport to play. The pads and helmet etc are not cheap.

Soccer and Rugby codes require a lot less gear to play.
So why did Canada pick it up and not more countries? There's got to be more to it than cost. There are amateur gridiron comps all over the world but not enough following to become professional
Why has AFL not been able to spread to a neighboring country like Gridiron has though?
If Canada was physically next to Australia, and our culture influenced theirs as much as the USA effects Canada you may find it's different
Rugby League has been able to spread from Australia to New Zealand but not AFL. Why is this?
You really need to ask this? RU and RL are increadibly similar. The players share similar skills and the supporters like the style of play. A transition from one to the other is easy. This why so many countries follow both.

Is RL followed anywhere in the world where RU isnt played?

That joined countries arguement does not work. Mexico borders the U.S. And they don't play Gridiron at any profession level. Is all soccer.

The simple fact is AFL is just not an internationally marketable sport. The rules and style of play are just way too unusual.

Rugby League is followed in PNG where union is virtually non existing.

It's a factor along with many other factors.

Can you think of other reasons why gridiron hasnt expanded? You make expansion sound so easy but it clearly is not

So in effect RL has only expanded to one non-RU nation in the entire world, and that developing nation is crime ridden and broke, and a close neighbour with RL's largest homeland.

League broke away from Union so of course there similar. But league took the best parts. Unlike AFL who borrowed bits from all codes , but it must of been the wrong bits - the boring as hell bits. That's the reason why there is no overseas interest. The only interest comes from patriotic cult members in Victoria who seem to think that the game was invented in Victoria.
Rugby League, the dominant force in Australian sport!

which sports did the AFL borrow bouncing the ball? Or 4 goal posts? Or playing on an oval? Or 18 players in a side? Or handballing? Or the length of the game?

Expansion in Sports is very hard, but there has usually been a reason why sports have expanded..

Cricket, Rugby Were expanded through alot of Commonwealth Nations.
and played in Universities..

Rugby League happened at a later date and was not played in Universities
so they are behind the ball straight away..

Gridiron is a complicated game to play and you need big squads.
it is also an expensive sport to play and have a team professionally
and no country will ever compete with American quality

(soccer is by far the easiest sport to play and understand..

and is the reason it is the world's number 1 sport.

Speaks volumes
Union actually disadvantages League. If Union was not around. Rugby League would be way bigger than it is.

It has actually made things more difficult to expand. For example South Africa has banned Rugby League in it's schools.

At the end of the day like it or not. Soccer, League, Union and Gridiron have all had way more success than AFL globally.

Rugby League for example has professional teams in four other countries Canada, France, New Zealand & England.

AFL can't even get a decent feeder club outside Australia while Rugby League has teams in PNG and Fiji soon.

This really puts things into perspective.

As for Gridiron, the fact it has a second professional league in a country with a population of over 37 million. Says the sport has grown in neighbouring nations, unlike AFL.

Is a proven fact Victorians tried to convert NZ to their game in the early years of the sport. But there was just no interest.

this is like groundhog day. You've raised all those points for years. Yet whenever I raise a point to counter it you return to the same diatribe.

Gridiron is a perfect example of a highly popular and succesful sport that cannot expand to any great degree beyond it's country of origin, even when it has an international reputation and media coverage. If Gridiron struggles to escape one continent there are obviously massive issues all sports face with expansion.

The sports that have managed to expand have done so because of historic influences and/or imigration, such as we've seen with the British empire. So until enormous numbers of Americans move to Europe, Asia, or Africa it wont expand there. Until enormous numbers of Australians move to any other country AFL wont expand internationally. RL doesnt need such a movement because RU has already laid the foundation because of British influence.

Read Leeroy's post, he understands the issues well it seems. It is far more complicated than "have a look at our game, who wants to play it over there", which is what you seem to believe. History, culture, wealth, tradition, and prejudice all come into it.

Gridiron still expanded successfully to another country though. Canada.

While AFL has failed miserably with it's attempts. You just can't accept no other country likes AFL  ..
Look.at AFL in China. Is just a joke lol..
AFL is a muppits game, it can't and never will grow internationally. =D =D

I am certain the NFL could put a team in London.
There is talk of the Jacksonville Jaguars relocation to London. So that blows a hole in any arguement that NFL could not be successful in another continent.
When they sellout in the UK.
