Is 8 weeks penalty what players usually get for something like that? Seems a bit too harsh. But only a bit.

Haven't seen much like it in recent times. Length of the ban is due to severity of injuries.

i think 8 weeks was about right for this situation..

in NRL he prob would of got 12 weeks depending on his record.

Last bloke who did that in Rl (Danny Williams ).a king hit that caused a fracture was given 16 weeks & never played in the NRL again .
As usual the AFL are soft when it comes to penalising anything in their sport

just saw replay of the Sydney roosters players shoulder charge in slow motion from Saturday and saw how far the player he hits neck goes back scary and lucky
