The NRL didnt have to give the best young talent, christ knows there was enough loose talent floating around after Perth, Adelaide, Hunter folded and St George/Illawarra, Manly/Norths and Balmain/Wests all merged.

As for not compromising the salary cap, thats true. The clubs did it themselves though - Melbourne lost two premierships ffs.

I think the point is you can put a team anywhere ... just recruit players in. Whereas Aussie rules has a significant presence across the country at grassroots rl does not. This is where the nrl need to focus I feel and where they initially went wrong with Melbourne where we see a dominant and successful team since pretty much inception yet grassroots is a very very minor sport with few teams and I think only one league across most of Victoria. I think this is improving a little but I think they need to learn from their mistakes here with Perth ... which I think they are ... but thinking it is more a local iniativd rather than planning. Whereas if you look at western Sydney AFL was planning years prior... talking to developers to get agreements to put AFL size ovals in new estates, getting into schools, supplying schools with equipment and support etc. the stuff I have read from rl people complaining about the nrl is that AFL do all this stuff yet they hear nothing from the nrl.
