Ok lets for forget averages, lets take out the Friday code vs code.
You say AFL show different games into each city etc
some games also overlap.
each AFL state gets a minimum of 4 FTA games aired each week into each state.
your AFL afternoon game into Melbourne may be delayed I don't really know
but this is still getting well over 200k viewers
that is 4 FTA games into each state also showing there home teams
this also maxes the figure.
yes there is overlapping etc etc ( I have taken that into account)
But the NRL only has 3 FTA games per week
and 5 exclusive FOX games.
with 1 less game.
but is still managing to beat the AFL.
you can say all you want about games airing into one state.
but they can simply watch it on FOX
this is what NRL viewers have to do for the 5 matches only available to 30%
OK let me try to break this down.
NRL:
Your entire audience can watch Thursday FTA live at 7.30pm
Your entire audience can watch Friday FTA at live 7.30pm
Your entire audience can watch Sunday FTA at live 4pm
30% of your audience can also watch Saturday STV at 3.30pm
30% of your audience can watch Saturday STV at 5.30pm
30% of your audience can watch Saturday STV at 7.30pm
30% of your audience can watch Sunday STV at 6pm
30% of your audience can watch Monday STV at 7.30pm
Total is 3 live FTA games for 100% of your audience, and 5 STV for 30% of your audience
AFL:
Our entire audience can watch Friday FTA at 7.30pm
Our entire audience can watch Satuday FTA at 3pm, although Melbourne get the game on delay
Our entire audience can watch Satuday FTA at 7.30pm
Our entire audience can watch Sunday FTA at 3pm
However,
those who choose to watch the 4 FTA games can only watch half of Saturday STV at 1.30pm
those who choose to watch the 4 FTA games can only watch half of Saturday STV at 4.30pm
those who choose to watch the 4 FTA games cannot watch Saturday STV at 7.30pm
those who choose to watch the 4 FTA games can only watch half of Sunday STV at 1.30pm
those who choose to watch the 4 FTA games can only watch half of Sunday STV at 1.30pm
Total is 3 live FTA games and 1 part delay FTA for 100% of our audience, and 2 STV games (4 half games) for 30% of our audience
Comparison of ratings based on same audience but different schedules:
Assuming the AFL and NRL had identical national audiences with FTA average audiences of 700k, and STV average audiences of 250k, this would result in:
- 2.1m FTA and 1.25m STV for the NRL, and
- 2.8m FTA and 500k STV for the AFL. (However, this ignores the fact that the AFL's 4th game is on delay in Melbourne and on Saturday arvo which never rates closer to 500k)
So despite a comparison of identical national audiences the NRL end up with 3.35m viewers (FTA +STV) from 8 games at an average of 410k, while the AFL end up with 3.3m viewers from 9 games at an average of 370k. Then you need to figure in the 3 extra rounds the NRL have, plus SOO, and its easy to see why the scheduling alone results in a higher total and average ratings for the NRL.
Does this make sense?
