Canberra is growing. Fact. 1.7 percent in the financial year of 2012/13 (from the Census website). Rate of growth is actually irrelevant. You can't deny that the AFL could put a permanent team there. Their fly ins are preparation and testing.The_Wookie wrote:GWS had two things going for it that Canberra does not - one of the largest population growth areas in the country, and a city of more than 5 million with one team in it. Brisbane is a one team town for a similar reason. The league has never mentioned Newcastle once. Not fucking once. The AFL have tried any number of teams in Canberra since the 90s as Fly in fly out types - Sydney, North, Western Bulldogs, St Kilda, Fitzroy, and now GWS - they have NEVER expressed a desire for a permanent team there, unlike Tasmania.Foolproof wrote:
Again - that will not stop the AFL from trying. All those figures went against GWS as well, and yet the AFL went ahead. What will stop Newcastle is the lack of a venue (does this Cos person claim they have one?). You'll find if so that this is the real reason why they didn't mention Newcastle. As far as Canberra goes, the statement made above by the AFL CEO is based in the fact that they are relying on the Giants to bring crowds to Startrack. Once they realise this is the wrong way to go about it, they'll realise they need a team there.
Don't throw this "this isn't an AFL town" around. Sydney's not. Neither's Brisbane. And yet they both have clubs.
Further if a venue is required, Newcastle has a 20,000 seat oval stadium - Newcastle Number 1 Sportsground - that Im sure the AFL would be aware of, since Australian football is currently played on it and the stadium was first built in 1876. Further the stadium seats more than Bellerive Oval and Aurora Stadium (both in Tasmania), Cazalys Stadium (Cairns), and both TIO Stadium and Traeger Park in the NT - and yet all these stadiums have had AFL premiership season matches. It was used for a preseason game in 2004.
Your a fucking moron, and you confirm it with every post you make.
I've never heard of that ground you mentioned in Newcastle, and I've never heard of any football games being played in Newcastle at all. News to me. If the stand that was pictured is the only stand there is, Aurora kills that outright. Probably mostly standing room - which would definitely scare the AFL off.
It is ironic that you abuse me in that manner. Usually abuse amounts to someone getting desperate. But I digress....
