Despite no Sydney or Brisbane team in the AFL Grand Final and Melbourne involved in the NRL Grand Final, the Saturday afternoon AFL GF still rated better than the Sunday night NRL GF.
Just curious as to why there was such a massive drop in viewers for the NRL GF in Melbourne when compared to 900,000 odd in 2006. I would have thought Melbourne easily winning the NRL premiership would have increased the audience. Willis perhaps you can explain the massive drop in audience numbers in Melbourne.

Adelaide 378,000 ..............28.51% of Oztam catchment
Perth 386,000 ..................23.71% of Oztam catchment

I predicted that the Melbourne audience would drop... the Sydney audience dropped as well for the AFL last year by a similar margin... I think that the bandwagoners jump off after the first year..
The Melbourne NRL figure is still OK in my opinion.
The Adelaide and Perth figures are disappointing for the NRL.. Its hard to see them getting another opportunity in my opinion..
I think the NRL should forget about expansion there, and look at another team in NZ ( Wellington) and perhaps QLD...
The Sydney AFL figure is a real worry though... its only 8,000 more than what they got the last time there was an AFL final not involving Sydney ( 2004).
This is despite the fact that the Swans have been in two GF's and won a premiership...
It just goes to show that even after this has happened, the AFL still cannot grow their audience in Sydney...
I suspect that 300,000 tops will be the maximum non swans GF audience in Sydney... Pretty ordinary in a city of 4.5 million where the games have been shown on free to air for 20+ years...

The Sydney AFL figure still resulted in Channel 10 winning the timeslot. Bearing that in mind, I don't think Channel 10 would be too fussed considering no Sydney team was involved and the game was a blow out. At the end of the day they still won the timeslot and that's all that really matter isn't it?

Those regional figures have doubled up numbers between the OzTam and AC Neilsen catchments in large parts of NSW and QLD and do not include any parts of regional SA and WA. Hardly a reliable source of tv ratings if you ask me.
At least with OzTam, all the capitals are covered and there is no double counting as is the case with regional tv ratings in areas such as the Gold Coast and Brisbane and Gosford and Sydney.

Check out the OzTam coverage maps in the link below. As you can see, Brisbane covers the Gold Coast and Sydney covers Gosford. How the Gold Coast and Gosford are considered Brisbane and Sydney is beyond me and these figures are doubled up when you understand that AC Neilsen covers these areas in their regional tv ratings figures. Totally unreliable if you ask me.ch0ok wrote:and what proof do you have of this doubling up in numbers?

Also you need to take into account that outside of the capital cities, the bigger population centres are in New South Wales and Queensland. There are no regional cities above 40,000 in SA or WA. There are several in NSW and QLD, more in each state in fact than Victoria which only has three (maybe four as I'm not sure about Shepparton).
