2014/2015 - A-League - Soccer Crowds and TV ratings

the highest rated socceroos match was 2.5m that watched us play uruguay in 2005 but that didn't include regionals

since then we rated 2.2m against italy in 2006 at 1am, 2.1m against japan at 12am, 2.2m against chile at 2am, 2m against croatia etc etc etc with all the other group stage and qualifiers scattered around the 800k to 1.8m mark from 2005 to 2014. a recent example is australia vs "lowly" iraq which drew 1.6m at a nice 8pm time slot

god only knows what the ratings would be like if we played a meaningful match at a timezone friendly slot! a world cup in australia or asia would smash tv records

interestingly, the wallabies barbarians game didn't even make the top 20(so it rated under 49k at 12am) but the all blacks vs USA rated 60k+ at 2am...are the wallabies in trouble? I don't know enough to comment on the wallabies but i imagine the socceroos smash them on that front while the a-league gave the super rugby a whooping last season and is doing even better this time around...good times :D

not even 600k watched it in the big 5 cities...including 12k in adelaide and some 40k odd in melbourne

i thought there were 900k RL fans in melb davey?

looks like people would rather chew on lego than watch the kangawhos

When australia and the asian cup hit town you'll see some real ratings for an international team and no commercial network needed

David Gallop's "unstoppable" A-League appears under siege with the Big Bash League threatening to become a summer juggernaut if the first free-to-air TV ratings of the Twenty20 tournament are anything to go by.

Football Federation Australia boss Gallop last week pre-empted the start of the BBL season with a series of remarks casting doubt over whether sports fans would embrace the short-form tournament while claiming his own competition was "unstoppable in Australian sport".

But coming from a former first-grade fast bowler, those comments are beginning to look like pure spin.

Cricket Australia executives are delighted with the response from fans to the third season of the BBL as it appeared on free-to-air TV on the Ten Network for the first time.

Each prime-time match on Friday, Saturday and Sunday earned more than one million viewers across Australia in regional and metropolitan areas.

On Friday night, the only time the A-League and the BBL went head-to-head on free-to-air TV, the round ball code was well and truly hit for six.

The BBL's Melbourne derby between the Stars and the Renegades was watched by around 804,000 people in the five capital cities.

By contrast, the A-League clash between Brisbane Roar and Newcastle Jets was viewed by only around 74,000 on SBS2 according to the official OzTam ratings system; less than a tenth of the viewership of the BBL.
