Don't forget that the Brownlow medal is for the best and fairest. That's a key difference between it and other awards - and it's the only award that works like that. Now the question is, how does Ablett Junior conduct himself towards the umps? If he has been a gentlemen a la a Bob Skilton or an Ian Stewart, then yes he should poll well. It also depends on the competition from within the team. But if he's a whiner - then that will cost him. Whining at the umps has always cost players votes - it's why players like Ted Whitten never polled well in the Brownlow. When I umpired I never voted for whiners even if they played a good game - because whining at the umpires is not fair and in the spirit of the game. It's why the umps are the best judges of fairness.

yeah you dont really ever see ablett whining to the umpires but then what we see is alot different to whats actually going on. i think ablett has it in the bag i would have said judd may have polled well but he was out for a few weeks because of his injury. TLPG what level of football did you umpire was it AFL or just local matches???

I've only ever had trouble with a lower age group once - and that was an Under 11's team out at Melton South who were pretty unruly. It was the only time in my career I went into control mode at that level.
Aside from that - the kids at the level loved me because they knew what was going on when I umpired (I was a talker out there). That reminds me of a favourite anecdote of mine - in 1999. I was umpiring an Under 10's game out at Banyule. There was about four or five Dads in a group making a bit of noise - calling on the kids to get in there and have a go. Good naturedly and not the rubbish you sometimes hear from bad parents. I knew what they were up to and when I had a ball up near them, I gave my usual spiel to the kids - plus an extra comment;
"Eyes on the ball, boys - and pay no attention to the peanut gallery over there!"
The Dads cracked up as one!
I miss that sort of thing!

They weren't my least favourite side to umpire all up, Dogsact! I had a number of worse ones!dogsact wrote:Melton South, that says it all!! ha ha
Lara
St.Marys (Greensborough)
Bundoora
Tuggeranong Bulldogs (the WORST!!)
Laverton/Western Magpies
North Sunshine
Geelong should win by at least 100 points and that's all I'll say!

yeah the only thing is if you judge things by probability the cats have won 12 in a row and if you look at this like id look at a roulette table ud say if reds come up 12 times in a row you'd put your life savings on black! but having said that footy is a totally different thing than a ball spinning round a wheele and i think the cats will absolutly slaughter the tigers on the weekend. u often see the bottom team knocking off the top team tho so who knows! congrats to both the saints and bulldogs tonight for finishing a draw you gotta love it the fact that its keeping the final 8 so close i cant wait to see who makes it =D>

I'll tell you what, I'm glad I'm retired after what I saw on Saturday, Dogsact!! Those Eastern Lions in the Eastern FL - their fans were as bad as Collingwood supporters! No - actually they were WORSE than Collingwood supporters! And the players weren't much better (you're a member of my Wiki - go look at my report and you'll see what I mean!)dogsact wrote:Damn, your second on the list. I am just getting to be a Greensborough boy, supporteer wise,.. It is all classy out thast way.
