Hey guys I thought I'd pop in and say hi lol, I haven't been here for awhile...
I like watching the A-League, the quality has improved ten-fold since it's inception. RL & RU (only internationals, Super15 sucks) in the winter and soccer/football in the summer.
RD of course the AL (easier than typing A-league) tv ratings are going to look small when comparing to the NRL (and AFL too) nationally, people need to take into consideration that the league and most of the teams are only 10yrs old, and it's the 1st year games are televised live on SBS's primary channel. The AL is doing well. It sits 3rd nationally out of the 4 'football' codes.
RD what we should focus on is 'will the AL games featuring WSW or SYD FC get bigger Sydney tv audiences than the SWANS and GWS?' I think it's a certainty, as much a certainty as 'the blade runner' getting raped by someone with AIDS in the next 12 months.
The AL only gets one game a round on FTA so it's hard but not impossible to compare the AFL & AL syd franchises... tonight it's the Sydney derby in the AL (sydfc v wsw), the game is only on fox, but I would say with confidence that if the game was on FTA it would easily beat GWS/C/sthnNSW giants average 20-30k syd viewers, as well as the swans 60-70k. Last weeks game on SBS featuring WSW got 122K FTA viewers in Sydney, smashed them by double and 6x!
Rd & co you should embrace the AL as it is showing all those southerners where exactly AFL sits in terms of popularity in Sydney, no amount of preaching the gospels of 'VLAD' and 'Barrassi' in the southern media can hide the facts. In Sydney RL dominates, and soccer sits 2nd, then there's a lot of space and air and emptiness... Then more space then finally on the horizon you can see something, it's RU and AFL in the rear.
If RL is the king in Sydney, then soccer makes up the majority of the noble class. RU has some nobles but mostly peasants. Australian Gaelic football (AFL) are new migrants, mostly peasants and a few un-recognised nobles. They make up most of the towns 'crazies', drunks, heretics, leppars, the no limbs beggars, basically the shit shit kickers.
