FIFA official : Qatar unlikely to host 2022 World Cup
http://ftw.usatoday.com/2014/09/2022-wo ... a-official
essentially there are talks of stripping them of the world cup
although these talks have been going on for a while, it's the first time FIFA have fronted the public and confirmed it.
With them stripping Qatar, the likely candidates to get the WC would be USA and Australia
Thoughts and repercussions on the domestic sports here if Australia was to get the World Cup?
For the most part, I doubt they would give us the WC at this point, given the USA already have the stadia ready and we would have to build/upgrade most of ours, but we were always going to do that anyway.
The last time we bidded for it, the NRL and ARU supported the bid and hinted that they would pause the NRL season leading up to and during the WC and/or play games in regional areas while in return the govt and FFA would upgrade virtually all the current suburban grounds in Sydney(they would be used as bases for the WC teams) and a new stadium would be built in Penrith...while the AFL did not want it originally but were willing to negotiate, but talks didn't reach that stage as we lost the bid anyway.
On a personal level I want it here and i'm sure the average Australian would too. All domestic codes are important here so i'm sure there a way we would be able to negotiate a compromise when it comes to stadium availability (MCG[AFL], Adelaide Oval[AFL], ANZ[NRL,AFL,ARU], Suncorp[NRL,ARU], Allianz[NRL,ARU], Kardinia[AFL], Hunter[NRL], GC[NRL], Townsville[NRL] stadiums were all the existing stadiums included in the bid that are shared with the other codes)

it would be an awesome event for Australia & show the bumsniffers what an actual world cup is.Swans4ever wrote:Would love to see it - just depends on fixturing
wookie had a heap of info in his webpage at one stage with a quick out line & several articles about problems the world cup would face.
ground sharing issues, several ground capacities needed to be up graded sponsorship contacts & AFL playing hard ball about conflicts with its scheduling & use of grounds
Australian sporting sponsorship
AFL excess of $50m
A league $30 million plus
ARU $27 million
NRLOL $25 million

Re: FIFA official : Qatar unlikely to host 2022 World Cup
i think the AFL wanted compensation as well as the MCG wont be used so for a lot AFL games they'd have to use etihad which would mean a lot of fans would get locked out due to the lower capacity
maybe a winter break could work, a lot of soccer leagues in europe have a winter break(summer for them) in the middle of the season, allows players to recover and the crowds always stay strong
the bid also includes some other positives for AFL, like further upgrades to adelaide oval, upgrades in geelong and more funding for the new stadium in perth
obviously its a big ask to ask fans of other codes to allow something like this to happen but this would be an event for all australia, not just soccer and we will all feel the benefits

Don't worry, only people who are employed will be able to help build and construct these stadiumsParraEelsNRL wrote:Naaaa, we can't have it, we stopped slavery a loooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooong time ago.
not sure if you fall in to that category

Like most things what is reported and what actually happens is two different things - AFL will hold out until they are promised something more than what FFA and gov was prepared to offer - it's all really about what both sides want to get and how much are prepared to pay - most AFL supporters I know would be happy to have it - people pretty much follow both in Melb

Re: FIFA official : Qatar unlikely to host 2022 World Cup
that was one of the other issues FIFA states in their world cup requirement that the stadiums need to have a capacity of minimum 40k.sydneyfc wrote:i think the AFL wanted compensation as well as the MCG wont be used so for a lot AFL games they'd have to use etihad which would mean a lot of fans would get locked out due to the lower capacity

meaning several stadiums will need to be up graded as well as the oval shaped stadiums the field would have to be adjusted to be made to look more rectangular

Re: FIFA official : Qatar unlikely to host 2022 World Cup
it would be a similar upgrade that they have at anz and etihad where seats can be moved in close to the pitch like they do for soccer and RL at etihad and anz
adelaide and the new perth stadium would have retractable seating which would benefit all codes that want to use those stadiums

don't think the adelaide oval has the retractable seating but the new perth may have like etihad.sydneyfc wrote:it would be a similar upgrade that they have at anz and etihad where seats can be moved in close to the pitch like they do for soccer and RL at etihad and anz

but outside of those stadiums many others will need up grades.
