ANZ and SCG will be part of a $500 million overhaul of Sydn
ANZ stadium will get a roof and the SCG will become a state-of-the-art sports and entertainment district as part of a $500 million overhaul of Sydney’s sporting venues.
The two new super stadium projects are at the heart of a dramatic plan to be unveiled by the state government within weeks that will put Sydney ahead of Melbourne in the race for major sporting events.
A consortium led by Australia’s leading retailer, Gerry Harvey, and advertising guru John Singleton is expected to be the successful tenderer to revamp the SCG Entertainment Quarter, which insiders claim will transform the historic Moore Park site into a leading sporting, restaurant and entertainment destination. The lease will be granted for between 35 and 50 years.
Much of the funding will come from a sport and cultural fund that is part of the Rebuilding NSW Plan recently announced by Premier Mike Baird.
Sports Minister Stuart Ayers, who will unveil the proposed changes within weeks, said: “As one of the most competitive and densely populated sports markets in the world, Sydney deserves two world-class rectangular Tier 1 stadiums.
“Western Sydney should also have a high quality Tier 2 facility that can support the needs of its growing population.

“A collaboration between stadium operators, private sector and the NSW Government is crucial if we are going to deliver genuinely world-class sporting precincts. This will help end years of ad hoc and low value spending on NSW stadiums.”
ANZ stadium will have a state of the art roof constructed over it, solving some of the chronic problems with the venue. Seating will not change, however, meaning spectators will still be sitting the same distance from the field.
Mr Ayers believes the roof will create a unique, climate-controlled atmosphere unmatched anywhere in Australia, even with only 20,000 fans inside.
“While the NSW Government will never dictate where sporting events will be played, a clearer investment strategy should allow sporting bodies to ensure the right games are played in the right venue,” he said.
Brookvale Oval will be the other major beneficiary in the plan, attracting $10 million for a renovation of its outdated facilities.
Leichhardt is likely to be the big loser, failing so far to attract any money for stadium redevelopment.

It is unclear if Penrith will be included in any redevelopments but Mr Ayers’ acknowledgment that the west of Sydney does need a Tier 2 redevelopment is promising for his home electorate of Penrith.
Parramatta has already been pencilled in for a $29 million upgrade.
The government has opted for the “two stadium” policy which will see Allianz given a major overhaul to become the best rectangular venue anywhere in the country. New eating areas, bars and state of the art technology will be added to the current plans for improved traffic and pedestrian access.
The Entertainment Quarter has been a white elephant for more than a decade, with retailers unable to achieve any foothold on the Sydney shopping scene.
If successful, Harvey and Singleton will head a consortium that will transform the rundown precinct into a hub for restaurants, community activities, major retail, much of it with a sporting flavour, and easy access to the SCG and Allianz Stadium.

The plans are believed to include the provision to knock down the walls between the SCG and the EQ, making the entire area more user friendly.
“This should be one of the most exciting developments in Australia,” Mr Harvey said. “We want it to deliver a great experience for the community. It won’t happen overnight and it will be done in consultation with everyone — the local residents, the retailers, the NSW Government, the SCG Trust and the Centennial and Moore Park Trust.
“Everyone has an idea on what this precinct should look like. We want to know what they think and deliver on its potential. Its proximity to the airport and to the CBD mean it should be avenue for all Australians, a genuine attraction.
“There should be a mix of modern, state of the art retail and restaurants, as well as a feel for the history of the place. It is time the people of Sydney became excited about this precinct.”

Re: ANZ and SCG will be part of a $500 million overhaul of S
typical stupid Sydney always trying to pay catch to victoria
they will spend 500 million then bulldoze ANZ 5 years after and say it was crap and out dated
"ANZ stadium will have a state of the art roof constructed over it, solving some of the chronic problems with the venue. Seating will not change, however, meaning spectators will still be sitting the same distance from the field"
the chronic problem with ANZ stadium is not the weather its the friggen seating & shit surface & thats something every one knows!
except the typical dickheads from sydney. they are the most populated city, most of the politicians from sydney, so they will spend tax payer money for votes to please the locals.

Re: ANZ and SCG will be part of a $500 million overhaul of S
Why do Sydneysiders persist in throwing good money after bad?
The SCG is very good now and further development is a bonus but it will NEVER come any where near the MCG sports precinct or Docklands CBD proximity.
A roof on SFS stadium for those rl princessess makes sense but ANZ has about the same number of good viewing seats and a roof would be a very expensive waste.
It simply is a shyte stadium.
The major gain would be for Australian Football in both cases, but still a major waste of taxpayers money.

they could, give every one heated lounge chairs for seats, have the stadium fully roofed and yet the NRL fans will still not show up. purely for the fact they do not have the fanscos789 wrote:Why do Sydneysiders persist in throwing good money after bad?
