AFL triumphs as Super Rugby GF airs on Nine

TV ratings Saturday May 8, 2021

Seven easily won Saturday night thanks to a smorgasbord board of AFL games with both Sydney teams, and the Gold Coast being broadcast in their respective markets.

The ABC has continued to struggle on Saturday nights since the AFL came to town and the public broadcaster moved The Durrells into the 7.30pm timeslot.

Super Rugby made it off of Nine’s multichannel and onto the primary channel for its Grand Final match up, but didn’t put much of a dent in the AFL.

Nine

The first season of the Super Rugby AU on Nine and Stan Sport came to a close last night with 207,000 watching the Queensland Reds defeat the ACT Brumbies. The game was on Nine’s primary channel in Sydney, Brisbane, and Canberra.

Stan Sport subscriber numbers revealed with 150,000 new subscribers since broadcasting rugby union.

Nine shares rise as Stan Sport subscriptions revealed

Nine Entertainment Co’s newly appointed chief executive Mike Sneesby has revealed the media company’s streaming service Stan gained nearly 150,000 sport subscribers since it began broadcasting rugby union matches earlier this year.

In a presentation to the Macquarie Australia Conference, Mr Sneesby indicated about 75,000 of those subscribers were new users to Stan altogether, with the remaining half existing subscribers who had upgraded to the $10 a month sport add-on package.

“The impact of Stan Sport will be most evident in our [average revenue per user] growth and...the June indicative forecasts show that in less than three months of Stan Sport, we’re seeing an impact on ARPU,” Mr Sneesby told investors and analysts. “Stan Sport is off to a fantastic start with rugby driving strong engagement, active subscribers approaching 150,000 and live audience numbers across Stan and Nine tracking at around three times last year’s results across Foxtel and Ten.”

The comments are the first public indicator of the performance of Stan Sport since February. Mr Sneesby, who was previously CEO of Stan, said the service had reached a level of maturity, with more than 2.3 million active subscribers and more than 4 million people that had entered their credit card details on the platform.

Stan is considered one of the key growth assets for Nine Entertainment Co with some analysts valuing the business at up to $1 billion. Nine also owns a free to air television network, 60 per cent of real estate portal Domain, key radio assets and newspapers including The Sydney Morning Herald and The Age.

Mr Sneesby said he did not expect Stan Sport to generate a significant uplift in the amount of subscribers on Stan, but that it would generate an increase in the amount each user was paying for the service as users add the package.

When asked about the split between new and old subscribers for Stan Sport, Mr Sneesby said: “It’s approximately 50/50.” Industry sources familiar with the original targets said the amount of new subscribers versus old was better than expected.

Stan first announced plans to enter the live sports streaming space in November last year, when it secured a multi-million dollar rights deal with Rugby Australia worth $100 million over three seasons.

Mr Sneesby said the company was on track to achieve $230 million in cost savings by financial year 2024 and outlined revenue targets for its digital operations. It also expects to generate 60 per cent of earnings from its digital operations and 35 per cent from subscription products by that point.

The $4.8 billion company said third-quarter metro broadcasting revenue was up 6 per cent on a year ago and digital subscription revenue had climbed 20 per cent year on year.

Nine shares closed 2.5 per cent higher at $2.89. The stock has gained more than 20 per cent so far this year and touched a record peak of $3.16 in February.

Well, that can’t be good.
How can Australian Rugby be fixed?
There are lies, damn lies and then there are ratings.
Rugby league, Australias most popular game in some of North Eastern Australia.

It cannot, Only if NRL suddenly starts to decline.

NRL could of killed Rugby Union's Heart if they had Kept the Bears in North Sydney
and had a few more teams in Brisbane..
