NRL on Channel 9 does not appear to have made the Top 20 for FTA on Sunday. Perhaps Wookie can shed some light? Meanwhile on Foxtel.

Thursday night bombed for Channel 9 too.
Last Night saw a big turn around in ratings fortunes from last Thursday with Nine slipping from first to third as a one-sided NRL match failed to perform well for the network.

Over on Seven, the return of The Front Bar helped boost the network to number one while 10 saw its network share lift by almost 3 points.

Leading the entertainment shows was MasterChef up slightly on the previous week. The show outperformed the NRL this week in Sydney and Brisbane.

Engaging with the tv audience is vital. It appears the NRL has a lot more work to do in Melbourne, Adelaide and Perth.

How engaged are viewers?

By considering the reach of a telecast (the cumulative number of unique viewers who have seen at least one minute of the program), it is possible to calculate the loyalty of an audience. When we look at this for the grand finals, there are significant differences between the codes and across markets.

The AFL appears to have a clear advantage in keeping its fans engaged. The average metropolitan viewer watched 102 of the 160 minute game telecast (64%) while the average NRL viewer watched 67 of the 120 minute game telecast (56%).

These differences however become much larger for the NRL across markets. In Sydney and Brisbane, viewers watched an average 64% of the telecast compared to only 44% in Melbourne, Adelaide and Perth. Therefore, the NRL not only has a smaller audience in these markets overall, but also a less engaged audience.

17000 for a Melbourne audience ... not too bad. How many set top boxes is that? That is, how do they work it out. Last I heard was 3000 people for each person recorded as watching. But thought that was changing as they were putting more boxes out to get better accuracy.

Dunno Fred, but if you check daily TV ratings you will note that many more Melbourne people are recorded as watching TV than Sydney people. This happens day after day and for every program. Including the same programs in the same time slots in each city. And despite Sydney having the bigger population.

So either the recording method is flawed (i.e. the set top boxes) or more people watch TV in Melbourne than Sydney. Or as that bloke that used to post here, Wackie or Woodie or something used to say, the ratings are only a survey and aren't entirely representative of exact numbers.
