SYDNEY rugby league fans have switched off Channel 9 TV veterans Ray Warren and Phil Gould.

The network’s ratings in Sydney plummeted an alarming 23 per cent for the opening game of the competition featuring premiers Cronulla against the Brisbane Broncos on Thursday night.

At the same time, pay television network Fox Sports picked up a five per cent increase in Sydney with the younger and more vibrant combination of Warren Smith, Greg Alexander and Kevvie Walters.

Overall the total figure for Thursday night’s match was 1,126,164 viewers.Worryingly that’s down 10.8 per cent on 2016.

Hmm, not the way Channel 9 would like the season to launch with the Premiers vs the biggest club in the NRL.

Nothing wrong with those ratings. The Sharks are probably the lowest rating team in Sydney so no surprise the number is a little less than last year when it was Parra v Brisbane.

And the 6pm Friday game got great ratings. TBH I thought that time slot would be a shocker but it's started ok.

It'll be a shocker for crowds .
With most watching on fox either at the pub/club or at at home

Certainly your fox ratings look up so far compared to last year, so the change has resulted in more subscriptions for fox. Not sure how ch9 feel about it though. Very low numbers so far, even including regionals

You got the ratings wrong pal. Metro 9/gem 430, reg 265, stv 270 = 965k. Not brilliant but just short of a mill so nothing to worry about after one game.

they were updated so my figures were correct at the time of posting. Starting the season with below 1m games isnt a great start

fox rating for last years r1 friday was only 139k, this year 270 odd.
Wow..........massive increase for Fox. And the 6pm game got 274k. Nine is gonna have to shake something up with their telecasts for sure.

Nine know what the problem is
Yet ignore it
People don't want to listen to gus waffle on with his personal agendas
RABS is over the hill
The telecast is woeful at times
Showing a ground shot from 40 Mtrs behind play.
The list is long .
Fox has a far far better coverage/commentators .
& im no fan of news ltd

Agree early days .
Ratings overall will prob go up slightly
Fox will still attract more & more viewers due to ch9s telecast
The commentary by that senile old Git Rabs is grating
Gus is too opinionated & has his own agendas
Some of the camera angles are downright stupid....ie ...a ground shot from 40 Mtrs behind play while a break is been made .
Plus the never ending promotion of the block & whatever other show they want to pump up .

But I don't think crowds will improve at all with the 6pm game
In fact I think they'll be down

I wouldn't look into crowds much this week..
pretty sure 5 of 8 games were rain affected.

And cronulla game had rain all day..(but not during the game)

NRL would be lived especially being the 1st Round

Good start to the year with ratings. When Sunday FTA figures come in it will probably beat last years opening round.

The crowds were poor due to the 5 days of torrential rain in Sydney. That's what ya get when you play games at suburban grounds where 3/4 of the people have to stand in the open.
