THE AFL's push into China is gaining momentum on the back of record viewership numbers for this year's Grand Final.

A total of 5.67 million people in China watched Richmond hammer Greater Western Sydney by 89 points at the MCG on September 28.

That represents a sizeable increase of 15 per cent from the previous year's encounter between West Coast and Collingwood

The Shanghai Media Group (average of 2.852 million, up from 2.415m in 2018) and Guangzhou TV (2.589m, up from 2.503m) broadcast the Grand Final on free-to-air television in China, while Tencent and BestTV showed the game on streaming platforms.

There was also strong interest in the lead-up to the decider, with up to 1.36 million people tuning in to each week of the finals.

The centrepiece of the AFL's China strategy is the annual game featuring Port Adelaide, which this year was watched by 4.01 million people in China.

The game was shown on two free-to-air television networks in China.

The Power hosted St Kilda at Jiangwan Stadium in Shanghai for the first time this year after having Gold Coast as their opponents in 2017-18.

The Saints will return next year, with their clash with the Power locked in for round 11 of the 2020 season.

I agree this has got to be the Biggest B.S ever told by the AFL..

there is no way 6 million people tuned in..

and if this ever was the case which it is not..

AFL would be over there now signing up broadcast deals and organizing multiple games.

but its all B.S

I’m thinking that that is pretty poor ratings for China. The place has over a Billion people. One or two million is nothing. I’m thinking it may acquaint to 1 or 2 set top boxes maybe. So the figures may be accurate but mean very little without context. People must remember that ratings are not raw numbers but estimates of how many watching ... and in China I would imagine those figures are very very low.

Fred look at the Logic behind this>>

AFL house are saying that China viewership was 6 million

this is double the amount of the audience in total in Australia.

what is worse they are saying it was an increase on last year by 15%
Plus they are saying 2 other platforms streamed the game>>

all this massive viewership, but no one attends the games, except expats :hmm:

lol the AFL should be playing 2 rounds in CHINA>>>>

they would get more viewers
than entire season in Australia..

6 million is nothing though in China and there is I believe questions as to how they come to their ratings figures. I would like to see where it rated compared to other shows screened at the same time. The whole point of any business going into China ... or was... was that you only have to garner a minute percentage of the population to have a decent sized and profitable product. Not saying I agree or disagree with the figures as don’t have sources ... just saying those who discounting them on face value (which I understand) need to consider if those figures are infinitesimally small by a China standards.

Yep........"fake tv ratings to be investigated" lololololol!!!!!!!!!!!! It seems you can 'purchase' audience ratings. Says it all really. I mean China is an authoritarian single part communist state so how could anyone believe anything that comes out of the joint.

Come to think of it.........fumblehouse seems to have stolen a lot of the Chinese governments work practices & procedures lololololol!!!!!!!
