Newly-named Canterbury Cup NSW secures five-year Grand Final stadium deal

The NSWRL’s premier competition is set for its most exciting season yet after unveiling footy apparel giant Canterbury as the new naming rights partner for the Canterbury Cup NSW and a five-year deal to play the Grand Final of the competition at Bankwest Stadium in Western Sydney.

“The Canterbury Cup NSW goes from strength to strength every season and this new partnership with Canterbury reflects that,” NSWRL Chief Executive David Trodden said.

This is the first time in Australian sport that a traditional apparel partner has sponsored the naming rights of a competition,” Cross said.

Both will broadcast again in 2019, with matches featuring in a regular 1pm Sunday spot on Channel Nine and FOX broadcasting matches on Saturdays

Fiji to host PM's XIII, enter into NSWRL competitions

Fiji will host the Prime Minister’s XIII game for the first time this season, enter a team into the Ron Massey Cup next year and then transition into the Canterbury Cup the following season in a huge boost to rugby league in the Pacific Nation.

The Pacific is going to be the fastest-growing area of rugby league in the world outside Australia

Cronulla Sharks aid Fiji’s NRL dream with NSWRL inclusion

Fiji is a step closer to joining the NRL.

In a major move towards the expansion of the NRL competition into the Pacific Islands, local Fijian team, the Kaiviti Silktails, will field a team in the NSWRL Ron Massey Cup competition next season - with the Cronulla Sharks joining forces with the Silktails.

The Sharks logo will also feature on the Silktails jersey when they debut in the Ron Massey Cup, which sits below the current NSW Canterbury Cup.

The Silktails boast around 80 contracted players including women, a junior academy list and it’s senior men’s team.

The relationship between the Silktails and the Sharks is two-pronged with Cronulla eager to aid the development and open the pathways for a fresh wave of Fijian talent into the NRL, while also having the first opportunity to potentially sign the next Maika Sivo or Semi Radradra.

NSWRL in strong state for 2020 season

NSWRL Chief Executive David Trodden has declared Rugby League in NSW to be in the strongest state it has been in recent history and is poised for another season of success at the launch of the 2020 NSWRL season today (Tuesday 3 March).

Trodden was joined at the launch at the NSWRL Centre of Excellence by Brydens Lawyers NSW Blues coach Brad Fittler, Fiji icon Petero Civoniceva, Harvey Norman NSW Women’s Origin star Maddie Studdon, True Blues Nathan Hindmarsh, Steve Menzies, Craig Wing and Steve Roach, representatives of all 12 Canterbury Cup NSW teams and Junior Rugby League players.

The NSWRL will administer 13 competitions in 2020 including the state’s premier competition, the Canterbury Cup NSW, and four regional NSW representative competitions; Fijian team, the Kaiviti Silktails will join the Ron Massey Cup and the Central Coast Roosters will join the Harvey Norman NSW Women’s Premiership.

The Junior Representative competitions kicked off in February, the senior regional representative competitions will start this weekend (Saturday 7 March) while other competitions including the Canterbury Cup NSW will start on Saturday 14 March.

“The 2020 season is shaping up to be the biggest and the best in the recent history of the NSWRL,” Trodden said.

“The decision by the NSWRL and the Country Rugby League to come together will see Rugby League in NSW governed by a single body for the first time in 80 years.

“We are now ‘united as one’ and this move has allowed us to deliver a wide range of immediate and long-term benefits to participants.

Fans set to lap up new statewide broadcast offerings in 2021

The Queensland Rugby League is pleased to unveil a new multi-channel broadcast strategy that will see its premier statewide competitions reach more people than ever before.

As the new host broadcaster for 2021, the QRL is committed to driving the production of high-quality viewing for fans of the Intrust Super Cup and BHP Premiership, along with other state competitions.

The new era of broadcasting commences in March when the spotlight falls on the Round 1 Intrust Super Cup clash between the Souths Logan Magpies and Burleigh Bears.

It will be the first of 20 regular season matches to be broadcast live during a fan-friendly timeslot.

Double headers will be a feature of the new programming, with talent from the women’s BHP Premiership and other statewide competitions to be showcased before the Intrust Super Cup broadcast as well.

Fans can watch these games on a variety of platforms including 9Now, QRL’s official website (qrl.com.au), the Intrust Super Cup app as well as on the NRL Network.

The QRL is also working closely with Foxtel, the code’s broadcast partner, on weekly streaming options for their viewers and customers.

Additionally, Channel 9 and Fox Sports will simulcast the 2021 Intrust Super Cup grand final as well as one finals match during each week of the play-offs featuring the top eight teams.

QRL chief operating officer Rohan Sawyer tipped the fan-friendly scheduling to be a big hit.

“Ultimately this is about engaging with as many fans as possible, in the format they want,” Sawyer said.

“We believe we have the capacity to reach more people than ever before, which is why this investment is so appealing for our partners and clubs.”

Sawyer said the QRL team would continue to work with technology providers and suppliers to innovate and grow the product.

“We see this as a project that will evolve over time, but we’re committed to hitting the ground running with a quality broadcast that is as good as fans have seen," Sawyer said.

“To have the support of the game’s broadcast partners and have the streams available in more places than ever before, and on more devices than ever before, is very exciting for everyone involved in our game.

“It is also another feather in the cap for our organisation following our recent investments into the ecommerce and digital sectors, all of which are delivering wider benefits to our people and communities.”

Sawyer revealed the QRL would also invest in a development program for commentators, headed by Wide World of Sports (WWOS) radio presenter and NRL commentator Peter Psaltis.

“Peter is excited about mentoring aspiring commentators with a passion for rugby league in Queensland,” Sawyer said.

“By working collaboratively with the game’s broadcast partners, this program has the potential to unearth some future stars of the commentary box.

“Peter cut his teeth in the Intrust Super Cup and other local competitions, and we’re absolutely delighted to have such a highly-respected professional supporting this program.”
