I would actually suggest that RL being number 1 in Queensland is debatable! It sure as heck isn't number one in Cairns, Mackay, the Sunshine Coast or the Darling Downs! And Aussie Rules is more than competitive in Brisbane and on the Gold Coast! The only other places I would give RL the definite lead is Townsville and maybe Mount Isa. Aside from Rocky, Gladstone and Bundy of course.

RL definitely the main sport on on sunshine coast - I can attest to this from spending much of my time there not too long ago and my partner being from there (hence me being there a lot if you know what i mean).

I live on the Gold Coast - RL is still the dominant sport. AFL has a very strong presence - not just at grassroots but senior levels as well with a few leagues running strong. The Titan's may be on the nose but RL is the clear dominant sport (footy code). Union appears to have died a quiet death.

I spend some time in Port these days, and by proxy - Cairns. AFL is pretty big indeed but RL is still the major sport.

When they play AFL on the main channel (by choice) but more important, I think, they start showing the AFL related shows on main channels - then that is when the aFL could claim some real movement into the area. I think this would be a good indicator. We have seen the odd game played on the main channels last couple of seasons which does show some growth but still no main channel side shows on at decent hours - apart from the Front Bar - on 7 - which is also saying something I guess. so little gains but a long way to go.
