Great news for the AFL with the Gabba to get a refurbishment as part of Olympics bid - well overdue anyway but a win win for the AFL and dare I say the Cricket played there.

with the Stadium linking under ground to the train station is big too..
also linking light rail running off it.

Its a Cricket Ground Buddy will always be..

I also seen it will take 4 years to build
with all the planning of underground and surrounds before stadium can be built

thats a pretty big disruption to the Cricket and Lions

my guess is AFL will ask for Springfield Lakes to be upgraded.
and play games there along with other games in QLD's North
as well as Gold Coast

Cricket, Gold Coast May get the matches With Australia
The Heat will prob play out of Gold Coast as well.

It is a Cricket and Aussie Rules ground and sometimes a concert ground - multi use. Although drop in pitches are just a matter of time but that is another thread/debate.

I think it will be great for AFL and aussie rules in general - anyway you want to look at it - the premier venue in the state will be used for AFL (and some Cricket). Do you think the AFL will contribute any money? I am sure they will be consulted as major tenants as to what they need but will they folk over the cash - in 2019 - they may have - nowadays ....post COVID not so sure.

no the AFL will not contribute money,

The AFL only contribute to infrastructure to get it over the line.
with there 5% to the development..
which benefits them entirely..

for example the Springfield Development
60Million was done by state and Local council
AFL and Lions put in $10million..

when you look at it.. it is $10million but look what they are getting out of it.

the Stadium Will be State and Federal Money.

Will be a Great Ground either way with transport links.

4 years stranded as a club though can have big effects.

Do you think they will be 4 years off the ground - I think there may be some time but can't see the lions off for 4 years.

be interesting who wins the little battle, Cricket or AFL

do they start it October or March will be the question.

The Development of the site will take 4 years
due to underground works under the stadium linking the stadium to the Train Station
along with other developments, the prob this has to be done mostly before they
can start the build of the stadium..

modern stadiums generally take Minimum 2 years to complete.
and that is before all the other work involved including demolition of outdated GABBA
and all works underground and surrounds.

no the AFL will not contribute money,
Thats a big call, given they have to a lot of other developments including Adelaide Oval.

But for major stadiums what the AFL generally does give is a guaranteed number of matches per year and a decades log contract for matches.
i do not see why they would have to contribute,

Cricket and AFL will sign deals long term to play there, that will be there contribution.
not sure how more expensive the leases will be...

Brisbane is in the box seat to secure the 2032 Olympic Games after the International Olympic Committee (IOC) accepted recommendations to install South East Queensland as its preferred candidate.

A final decision is expected to be made as early as July, ahead of Tokyo 2021, and if Brisbane is selected, it will be the first Olympics Games to be hosted in Oceania in over 30 years.

Would be great to see another Olympic Games in Australia. The Gabba redevelopment and surrounding infrastructure and transport links look fantastic. Good luck with the Olympic bid Brisbane. :thumbleft:

Brisbane Showgrounds is another option, has been used for Australian rules before.
Of course a low cost option would be to use Carrara.
