Well, after legends of AFL slammed the state of the game and the head of Channel 7 called for changes to stop the devastating drop in TV ratings the AFL have announced a massive 9 rule changes for 2019. Yep - 9!!!!!

Is there any sport in the world that changes it's rules as much as the AFL??? They are clearly desperate to clean up the mess the game has become but 9 rule changes in one year is incredible.

The danger is the unknown consequences some of these rules will bring to the game. Let's hope their is more good than bad and the TV ratings leakage can be blocked before it becomes a flood.

ive looked over the rules, there is a couple big changes especially the 6-6-6
most are small, but ya gotta think WOW AFL why are you changing the rules again..

Panic Mode..

this could ideally back flip!

Ya never know. They desperately need to clean up the fumbling congested mess but the problem is the unknown consequences as I stated.

I suspect once a few rounds are played and coaches and players work out new tactics there will be new problems thrown into the mix.

I think that is the result of having a game that is fundamentally flawed with no rules enhancing ball control and continually rewarding failure and mistakes.

it can be mended - just adjust the rules, penalties and the scoring accordingly

The mess that is the Australian Fumbling League has once again reared it's ugly head!!!!! Every year, year after year people involved in the game whinge & whine & moan about how ugly the game is as a spectacle.

As an objective viewer I can only agree!!! It is the ugliest game in world sports. Every year rules are changed. Suggestions are made. The number of players is debated. But nothing changes. The mess remains.

This time leading coach Alistair Clarkson said the game is in a 'dreadful place'. Geelong coach Chris Scott suggested the game should be played by 16 players to reduce the ugly congestion. Clarkson added, 'our game across the board is not seeing any exciting brands of footy, passages of play, there's hardly any goals scored'.

One can only agree with this. It might help if the dills could actually kick straight!!! Or maybe stop giving a participation point for missing. It's a professional sport not a pick up game played by 6 year old's!!!

What do the fumblers here think would save the game from the ugly mess it has become????

The increase in fitness levels and new coaching tactics have changed the game for the worse. Now we see 36 players following within a kick which is messy and error riddled.

This is a very interesting time for the sport. Some people want drastic rule changes to force the game back to something that resembles Australian rules football. Others are against changes, saying they are the cause for the current mess. They want the game to evolve its way out, not for rules to potentially make things worse. IMO things won't improve on their own, we need substantial changes and soon

Was a good game on Saturday night at Metricon ... was there and the run of 4 or 5 goals by the suns in the second quarter was Champaign football. Would like to see more of that.

I have long advocated for 16 per team on the feild. Would slow the game a little re: more running, open up the ground and the play, and... save money and build team lists as more depth due to smaller lists.

Been saying it for years now. The VFA was a 16 position comp with no wings.

At the moment it is like rugby (league and union) with all the stoppages and “scrum” like play where a ball sits at a bottom of a pack as players wrestle to get it out. Free flowing play, contested marks... more of this... but not too free flowing where it’s like a basketball game lol.

Probably your most sensible post ever pal. Well done!!! Yep. Your games a mess. Massive changes are needed. Let's hope Gilty and the boys take a bit of time off chasing junior female staff around the office & get to it!!!!!!!

The ugly game seems to be getting uglier. Every man and their dog in AFL land are whinging and whining about it. Rodney Eade. Kevin Bartlett. Mathew Lloyd. Gary Lyon. They all agree the game is a mess.

Strangely I've been saying this for decades. The game has descended into a congested, ground level, grovelling disaster. No recent rule change has worked. And they've tried plenty. The problem seems to be the game itself. It's just fundamentally hopeless in its skill level, structure and inept execution.

Sad days for a once great game!!!!!!!!!!!! :salute: :salute: :salute: :salute:
