Sydney AFL shunned - no one cares!!!!
Sydney AFL shunned - no one cares!!!!
The supposed 'big' derby clash between the Swans and the Ginats on Friday has been hidden behind another game played at the same time between 2 Melbon teams. The Melbon game will get FTA coverage whilst the Sydney game will get a tiny viewership on Fox only. And to rub more salt into the wound the FTA game won't be shown in Sydney due to the chronic irrelevance of AFL in the harbour city.
This is an obvious admission by the broadcasters and the AFL that the mess just doesn't rate in good 'ol Sydney town. We already know western Sydney is a disaster for the fumbling game but it now shows that apart from expatriates and a few hundred ex rugger, lily white boyos from GPS schools no one cares.
It seems beatup will be pom pom waving and banner flapping to a tiny audience. Sad but true lololol!!!!!!!!!

Re: Sydney AFL shunned - no one cares!!!!
the AFL came out and stated that the reason they did this with two games overlapping
was to make the attendance bigger... ( did not really make sense)
they said the Tv ratings would not change much having two games to the 1
Puzzling really...

Weird. The one thing the Swans do well is crowds. They're probably right about the ratings though. The two Sydney teams ain't gonna rate no matter when they play.leeroy*NRL* wrote: Wed Apr 15, 2026 5:02 pmthe AFL came out and stated that the reason they did this with two games overlapping

pretty much, the AFL would be thinking 40k attendance and a slightly better tv figure for the night than the usual (into SYDNEY)Terry wrote: Wed Apr 15, 2026 5:17 pmWeird. i think they just do not want this game showed as a stand alone..
but they have 5 weeks of this 2 games at once or 30mins apart over the next Month.
the reasoning >>> More teams in Primetime

Very strange scheduling. You would think both the broadcasters and AFL miss out by having two games on at virtually the same time on a Friday. Very difficult to see any up side.

Re: Sydney AFL shunned - no one cares!!!!
Sydney vs Greater Western Sydney is live Friday night on Chsnnel 7 and Fox Footy across NSW/ACT.
Similar to the South Australian, Western Australian and Queensland local derbies that are only ever broadcast live in their respective states.
Whilst it would be nice to have the national broadcast rather than a double header, surely what’s most important is the game is live, Friday night primetime in NSW/ACT on free to air and pay tv, unlike the the delayed free to air coverage that happens on a Saturday due to the Super Saturday exclusive Fox Footy broadcast deal.

It is weird - the same thing happens I think with Port and Adelaide in a few weeks. Very strange.Terry wrote: Wed Apr 15, 2026 5:50 pmleeroy*NRL* wrote: Wed Apr 15, 2026 5:24 pmpretty much, the AFL would be thinking 40k attendance and a slightly better tv figure for the night than the usual (into SYDNEY)Terry wrote: Wed Apr 15, 2026 5:17 pm

Makes no sense - crowd figures for this game would not change much I would think - as Terry said - Swans do draw well with crowds - and this being a local derby - whatever Giant's fans there are are likely to attend regardless. And being a Friday night - isn't it showed live into Sydney anyway?
