Do you think they’ll have a dedicated opening event at the new AFL stadium like they did for Optus Oval in Perth / or will that simply be the opening ceremony? I’d say the later but they may try to milk it. Either way - massive boost for AFL.
yea
the 35K mongas from the Sthn states will have nearly 2 seats each all to themselves      :(/ :(/ :(/

Suncorp No Upgrade

The stadium which had 180 Faults prior to report of the "100 day review" to not even get a lack of paint.. seems quite odd..

the Stadium that has by far the most sporting events
the stadium that has by far the most entertainment events

the stadium which is 22 years old

the GABBA was done in 1995 and completed with more upgrades in 2005
is really not that much older than Suncorp

In fact Suncorp will be the GABBA's Age by 2032.

I think you’ll see a lot of large concerts and events going to the new stadium Leroy - logistically it is much easier on the promoters to go there - which was a selling point made in support.

Sportswise you have two sports there - year round, and with big bash, test, one day and T20 for cricket. Its will also likely have conference rooms (state of the art) that would be a preference I would imagine. So there’s a fair bit going on - throw in the Olympics and para Olympics - it’s a win. Win for sport and the state.

Suncorp have really missed out - there may be a few dollars here and there - but only if anything to do with Olympic events should they go there - and will be minor. I think all the money has been allocate - and of course there will be the cost blow outs I sure they have accounted for.

Imagine if they play a rectangle game at the new stadium lol. Whilst it may not be good for viewing it may be more cost effective - particularly if a bigger crowd can go - origin anyone ???? I mean they use ovals now don’t they in Melbourne and Perth ? I would piss myself laughing imagining asif melting down if that happened - but it could - an extra how many thousand ???

oh what utter crap
a concert at Suncorp would be exactly the same

Suncorp about 50 sports events a year .. every year for 3 sports ... one QLDs premier sport
this proposed crap stadium after the olympics
barely 20
one of those a minor niche sport in QLD from Vicdumbia

its garbage
its corruption

its going to be opposed at every level
as it should be
Its far from a sure thing fwed ...... far from it

how does anyone justify 10 billion dollars for a half empty venue
that has a game between the paddle pop wions & whorethorn
with TV ratings in Brisbane akin to pepper pig , i mean ... no one cares

& won't upgrade a venue that would host Origin to 65K every time its played there with a million more Qlders watching on TV

yea
nothing sus about that eh [-( [-( [-( [-( [-(

Oh stop ya sooking and whining. You look pathetic. This thread has been a classic with your predictions of what would happen.

You even suggested the Opening ceremony would be at Suncorp Stadium. What a drongo. :(/

Meanwhile, we are getting new stadiums worth billions of dollars in QLD and TAS. You’re getting nothing for Suncorp. 🥳

‘Old and tired’: Greenberg warns SCG needs upgrade as Brisbane promised first Test after Olympics

Cricket Australia has promised Queensland hosting rights for the first Test of the 2032-33 summer at a newly built Brisbane Stadium, immediately after a home Olympics and Paralympics, as chief executive Todd Greenberg declared the SCG “desperately” needed future upgrades or risked being left behind.

Greenberg, a former board member of Venues NSW, which oversees the state’s major sporting facilities, including the SCG, says Sydney’s premier cricket venue needs upgrades.

“Incredibly, what we’ll possibly see now is the SCG will desperately need some attention because it will fall far behind some of these other iconic stadiums across the country,” Greenberg told SEN.

“Some of those stands there are extremely old and tired [at the SCG]. The people who are running Venues NSW and the SCG know that. We’ve helped them strongly advocate for more funding.

“No one loves the SCG more than me. I’m born and bred in Sydney, so I spent a lot of time there, but this is what happens in modern sport; investment goes into stadiums and it creates a new benchmark. The new stadium in Brisbane will do that.

“We’ve got to continue to lift the bar all over the country.”

Do you think SoO could be at the new AFL stadium at Victoria Park? I mean the hold it at other AFL grounds? The extra seating means more money and they could showcase SoO in a world class arenas - a brand new one. I think this is on the cards!!

How exciting for Brisbane. Really looking forward to travelling up there to watch the footy when the Lions play the Swans. Looks nice and close to the CBD too.

Federal government throws support behind LNP’s controversial new Olympic Games venue at Brisbane’s Victoria Park

https://www.theguardian.com/australia-n ... nt-funding

Commonwealth commits $3.4bn to Games infrastructure including 63,000-seat stadium that will serve as future home of AFL and cricket

The federal government has thrown its support behind a controversial new Olympic Games venue at Victoria Park in Brisbane planned by the Queensland government.

The 63,000-seat venue – to be the city’s largest stadium – will host the opening and closing ceremonies of the 2032 Olympics and cost $3.8bn.

The federal infrastructure minister, Catherine King, appeared at a Queensland Media Club event with the deputy premier, Jarrod Bleijie, on Thursday to announce the commonwealth would commit $3.4bn in funding for Games infrastructure.

The commonwealth will reallocate funding away from the planned Brisbane Live Arena to the new stadium.

“For us, this is about ensuring that when we hand the keys back after the closing ceremony, Queensland has the infrastructure it needs to build on its incredible legacy for decades to come,” King said.

The Queensland government and Brisbane city council will develop a new precinct plan for the area with a focus on access to green space, she said. It will serve as the home of AFL and cricket once the Games are over.

King said appropriate consultation would also be undertaken with stakeholders, including affected communities and First Nations groups.

Victoria Park holds historical significance, particularly for Brisbane’s Indigenous community. The area was used as a town camp for decades and is a massacre site.

Bleijie said he was confident of reaching an agreement with local Indigenous groups over use of the site. Parliament passed legislation last month to permit the government to override the cultural heritage act if a deal cannot be reached.

“Part of the deal that we’ve struck with the federal government is … that that consultation does take place,” Bleijie said.

“I’m confident we’ll secure support, and we’ll just go through the motions.”

Neither state nor federal governments announced their position on the Victoria Park stadium before going to the polls in recent months. The premier, David Crisafulli, ruled out building a new stadium and ruled out building one at Victoria Park before last October’s state election. He apologised in March.

Asked on Thursday, Bleijie said there was no alternative to the change, because no other site was suitable.

The new deal meant the planned 17,000-seat Brisbane Live Arena, near the city’s Roma Street Parkland, had now lost all public financial support. It was initially planned to host swimming, which would now be held in a new facility at Centenary Pool in Spring Hill, within walking distance of Victoria Park.

King said the federal government had decided to shift funding away from the venue after the state government had excluded it.

But Bleijie said the arena would still be delivered in time for the Olympics, on a new site next to the old Gabba stadium in Brisbane’s south.

He said the department would go to formal procurement by the end of the year, with construction under way by the end of 2026 “and into 2027”.

“We absolutely will partner with the private sector. We will go to procurement on the Brisbane arena by the end of this year,” he said.

It would be funded by a deal for development of the site of the Gabba cricket ground, which would be torn down.

Bleijie said works on Victoria Park were also imminent, with geotechnical and other preparatory work on the site already under way, as of Thursday.

The estimated cost of $3.785bn for Victoria Park did not include “associated precinct and transport infrastructure costs”.

The Games venues would cost $7.1bn overall, split evenly between the two levels of government. They would construct 17 new or upgraded venues, including the new National Aquatic Centre at Spring Hill.
