American gun control debate

Post by Xman »

Has anyone here kept up to date with the current gun control debate in the USA?

Crazy stuff! People demanding their right to bear arms despite a death toll of over 11,000 per year! #-o

The NRA are mad. Saddest part is they have millions of followers. Hopefully Obama can change the way Americans think about their guns.

2nd Amendment right... oh lord.

The fear in that country is out of control. Half the population are scared of being slaughtered by mass shootings, and I dont blame them. The other half dont seem to care about their annual gun death toll of 12,000 people. Theyre justifying their crazy arsenal of guns by their fear of being attacked by someone else with a gun, or their tyrranous government.

If Obama survives his term without being shot I'll be impressed.

It's hard to think what it will take to have the Americans change their minds on gun control. They will go on having massacre after massacre and there will be the occasion fiend attempt to have some restrictions but I wouldn't hold my breath. Obama's plan is to try and limit the type of guns out there but like I said I wouldn't hold my breath. The gin lobby will only see it as the tyrannical government trying to gain ultimate control over the citizens. I wouldn't like to be in Obama's shoes, too many crazy people have guns.

Yeah, that's been the reaction. Mass hysteria over their government attempting to take full control over their people. There have even been county sherrifs coming out stating they will refuse to let the federal agents enter their precinct! Gun owners stating they will shooting federal agents who come to collect their guns! The most ridiculous points I see are:

- why would a developed nation's government slaughter their own people? What would that achieve?

- how the hell do they think a disorganised ban of civilians with no leader, limited communications, limited weapons of war, and a limited supply of ammunition, could stand even an afternoon against the US armed forces?

- the government are only banning assault rifles which have no place outside the military. They still get to keep their shotguns and pistols. They're behaving like theyre being totally disarmed (which is probably more appropriate).

- they use Australia as an example of how gun control fails. Yet our gun death rate plummeted and our crime rate effectively remained the same, or even dropped. And even more amazing, once we lost our guns our right wing government didnt kill us all and take ultimate control!

I can't see it ever changing in America. Guns are too entrenched in American culture.

Thats on a very broad interpretation of the second amendment though - whether its in the spirit of the amendment is another story.
I know, but apparently that's how the Supreme Court of the USA see it. That broadly.

True, but that is surely a reflection of a bad societal balance that needs to be corrected. Police included.

The American gun laws can't change without a Constitutional change.

thats the problem, to many people are blocking it and don't want change

in that link i posted with Jim jefferies he talks about when it was first written up about an individual's right to bear arms how dated it is, as it was around when the Muskets were invented not fully automatic guns
