The NZRU has moved this weekends super rugby semi final between the Hurricanes and the Chiefs in Wellington from its normal 7.05pm kickoff local time to a 4.35pm kickoff so as not to clash with the huge block buster NRL clash , NZ Warriors V Melb Storm clash at 7.30pm in Auckland
Whilst trying to make out this change was a fan/family friendly decision , there is no doubt the NZRU believes clashing with the NRL will cost them fans at their game & tens of thousands of viewers on TV ... this is unheard of in NZ & the first recognition by the NZRU of the growing appeal the NRL in NZ.
Sky NZ are pleased there will be no clash & in fact believe the Rugby union semi final TV audience will lead into watching the NRL game making it one of the highest rating non final domestic football games ever in NZ.
The Warriors V Storm game sold out weeks ago, their home game against the Broncos another month away , is also sold out. The Wahs are on track to be the first NRL side to sell out all 12 home games in a season.
