Average attendance, home games on the Gold Coast 2022

Suns 12,360

Titans 12,881 (1 game to go)

Suns have done well considering they’re in one of “heartlands of rugby league”, “no-one knows about them”, “no-one cares about them”, “no-one talks about them”, and “no-one goes to see them”.

And in crowd order

Date Day Rnd Crowd Team
16/07/2022 Saturday 18 19254 Titans
09/07/2022 Saturday 17 18031 Suns
02/07/2022 Saturday 16 16027 Suns
24/04/2022 Sunday 6 14897 Suns
13/08/2022 Saturday 22 14728 Suns
09/04/2022 Saturday 5 14478 Titans
10/04/2022 Sunday 4 14349 Suns
11/06/2022 Saturday 14 14290 Titans
29/04/2022 Friday 8 14102 Titans
19/03/2022 Saturday 2 13481 Titans
30/07/2022 Saturday 20 12461 Titans
14/08/2022 Sunday 22 11753 Titans
19/06/2022 Sunday 14 10507 Suns
02/06/2022 Thursday 13 10334 Titans
22/05/2022 Sunday 11 9882 Titans
31/03/2022 Thursday 4 8774 Titans
31/07/2022 Sunday 20 8282 Suns
22/03/2022 Saturday 2 8280 Suns
15/05/2022 Sunday 9 6136 Suns
28/08/2022 Sunday 24 Titans

The battle has just begun.
suns played two games in NT against demons and kangas which were not added to suns average on GC
and were attended poorly at both.. they would of been attended poorly on the GC as well.

also as you already know and freddy stating it number of times.

3 highest attendances for the SUNS were against
Richmond
Collingwood
Geelong

and all 3 were heavily dominated by away teams.. (boosting the average)

So the statement of SUNS are not popular or not cared much for are quite true considering...
Sun's definitely have a niche. AFL is strong on the coast, no doubting that, and there is support there for them. I wouldn't say they are unpopular - nor massively popular - I think indifference may be the word. When they start winning more, crowds will definitely come and rise as per your own observations. I think this is where the Suns have done better than GWS - they have a rusted on supporter base that has stuck through with them through all the bad years - this will not change - you will get a lot of bandwagon jumpers when they do well and some of these will stay on - most will not - but they can only grow from the rusted on base.

titans also played a home game at magic round in brisbane - I can tell you Titan's get their fair share of away crowds - I have posted links previously to articles about this - and the crowds for their respective home grounds are reasonably similar - Suns even beating them one year at least. As it is a predominately RL area with many supporters for many NRL teams you are likely to get a higher proportion of people going to an NRL game (if you follow league you are more likely to go to a league game - ergo and area with more league followers should get more at the gate). Titans are definitely on the nose with locals - ripped off a lot of tradies. either team doing well will draw crowds and new followers - no doubt - but even more so on the GC.

Reversing the positions is the perfect example of twisting statistics to your own use.
it is only fact that crowds go up if your a winning team in Australian sports

if a team is coming last and will get the spoon and averages 13k one season.

do you not think if that same team finished in top 4 that would increase by a fair margin ???
There are clubs where there is a history of little movement in either direction based on ladder position. Collingwood for example have always had strong membership numbers - even in years where they got the wooden spoon. Carlton and Essendon have been generally strong as well. They have always been the big three in terms of memberships in the history of the game. Melbourne have the consistent connection to the cricket club.

Of course there are clubs who have fluctuated based on ladder position to the point that they are made fun of for it. Richmond and St Kilda are notorious for it, especially Richmond. It's why when they struggle the board just absolutely panics.

I did my best to ignore Leeroy’s post about the weighting that popular opposition teams gave to the suns attendance, mainly because I thought he must have been having a bad hair day at this time.

If you are applying criteria to two sets of data for comparison you must apply the same criteria to both sets.
When deducting the 3 “popular” away side crowd numbers from the titans, average for 2022 is in the Suns favour.

Not wanting to count crowds because they attract good crowds is pretty much saying they don't count because they are good.

Interesting.

Yes, plenty in the media about how there is often more opposition than Titan”s fans. The Titan”s actually went all out as a promotion to get more of their fans to the game citing they wanted to out do the opposition. What I do notice is that afl fans on the GC who have another team, a large cohort have the suns as their second team. I don’t get that feel with the Titans - possibly as it is a large Rl area. For either team winning will see their brand grow

Yeah that was a cracking game. Adding the Dolphins to the NRL seems to have increased crowds in Queensland for other teams and games.

The Lions played an awesome game also on Saturday in SA vs North Melbourne.

Both the Lions & the Broncos are looking good this year. I don't think they have ever been both so good the same year so this year is very exciting.

Both the Gold Coast teams suck though as normal.

On another note, how good was gather round in Adelaide on the weekend. Apparently the whole state stopped to watch & follow it. It dominated the media.

Brisbane could only dream of that happening with the magic round where only Rugby League diehards really follow it.

It just shows the difference in each code where footy in Adelaide footy is a religion & Rugby League in Brisbane is just a popular sport.

What alternate reality do you live in
You just keep posting utter rot
The whole state stopped to watch 🤣🤣
Dumbest thing I’ve read this year

RL is the dominant sport in Qld by a long way but in fumblefan bubbleworld it’s not .
