AFL to seek $500m plus loan during unprecedented crisis

The bank loan that the AFL is seeking to secure the game's future is expected to exceed half a billion dollars.

AFL sources said that the prospective loan, which the league will need to effectively fund the shortfalls and keep the competition running without crowds and games, would be greater than $500 million.

The AFL has been in discussions with the NAB, which is the league's banker and corporate partner about seeking credit, but the AFL could also borrow from other lenders, given that the major lender might not want to loan the entire amount sought by the league.

While chief executive Gillon McLachlan is leading the AFL through the crisis, one of the commission, former Macquarie Capital boss Robin Bishop, is playing a key role in the AFL's strategy for securing liquidity and shoring up the game's parlous finances. Macquarie is Australia's largest investment bank.

The figure of more than $500m points to the huge amount of revenue that the AFL and the 18 clubs have lost, in a matter of days, due to the suspension of the season until at least May 31 and the recognition that games are unlikely to be played straight after that date and indeed might not be played this season at all.

Hopefully asking for a handout Freddo. If it gets one it will close the gap on handouts the AFL has got over several decades.

Hope that helps.

this crisis is a double whamy for the NRL clubs
with asset leagues clubs also shut down.

so you have a club that cant play
than your company that funds the club can not trade.

its massive.

Panther Panthers are looking at a loss of $40 million alone.

Yep. This could go anywhere. The best idea I've seen is to divert funds from refurbishing ANZ to the football codes who use it. RL, RU and soccer. That would be the simplest politically for Gladys. It's money already budgeted. It's not taking anything from a stimulus package or other services. Folk who hate RL will of course whine and squeal like stuck pigs about it.

I see the AFL is exploring getting a loan. You can bet London to a brick they'll also be hammering Gov't for a handout.

Could be a huge tactic by the AFL

inquiring about a loan of $500million plus
putting massive stress on the game>>

Government could walk in and bail them out.

just a theory.

and that right there is the difference in mentality between an afl fan and nrl fan

the afl has reportably gone to a bank for worst case scenario plans, the nrl have already gone begging to the PM for tax payer funds
Australian sporting sponsorship
AFL excess of $50m

NRLOL $25 million
