NSW vs QLD has been played in RL for 112 years now. Thank goodness they stole it off the AFL back in 1908.

Prior to Origin selection was based on where you played not where you were born or first registered to play (Origin selection rules in the AFL era changed somewhat). State of Origin didnt become State of Origin as we know it until very late in the peace. Interstate and before that intercolony matches have almost always been been played between all sorts of sports, but calling and marketing them as Origin didnt take off until the VFL/WAFL game in 1977. For league it didnt take off until 1982, even though there was a trial of the Origin concept in 198 and 1981.

Reality is I dont think it was so much stolen as a natural progression from the state league based state games that both codes were playing up until that point.
