Details for Brisbane’s bid for the 2032 Olympics have been revealed, with a new world-class 80,000-seat stadium central to the plans.

It comes as an Australian delegation met with Olympics powerbrokers in Switzerland, with Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk telling the congregation that Queensland would stage a “safe and welcoming” Olympic Games.

The new stadium would host the athletics and opening and closing ceremonies of a south east Queensland Games.

Potential locations for the new venue include the RNA Showgrounds, QEII Stadium at Nathan, the Mayne Rodd Rail Yards at Bowen Hills and Albion Park.

The masterplan also includes two athletes villages - one in Brisbane and the other on the Gold Coast - a faster rail network linking the region and a second M1 Highway between the Gold Coast and Brisbane.

Specific details of the new stadium or other venues to be used as part of a Brisbane Olympic are yet to be revealed, however Suncorp Stadium, the Gabba, Queensland Tennis Centre and the Sleeman Sports Complex would likely be part of the bid. The Brisbane Aquatic Centre, Entertainment Centre & QEII Stadium, among others, are already considered dated facilities and would need work to be considered. There’s also a host of facilities on the Gold Coast built or upgraded as part of the 2018 Commonwealth Games that could feature.

If the IOC likes what it hears, Queensland will proceed on its final bid, which will go before the IOC just before the Tokyo Olympics in July next year. A final decision would then be likely by 2022. China and Russia loom as the main rivals to a Queensland bid. Shanghai and St Petersburg also are understood to be readying bids for 2032.

If Brisbane was to host the Olympics, it would be the third Games held in Australia, with Melbourne the first in 1956 and Sydney the most recent in 2000.

Whilst we are on the topic of battle of the football codes in Brisbane thought this would be interesting! To see what becomes of this, if any one has an interest in property or it has been said that Brisbane & SE Qld is about to experience a population boom similar & become a global city and put Brisbane on the map.

IMO there isn’t a need for a completely new 3rd major venue in Brisban, as the reds and roar are near dead now and broncos have troubles filling Suncorp now days & the lions are the sole tenant of the Gabba out side of cricket season & then it only hosts a test & a few Odi’s and t20 games. The expense of a brand new venue isn’t needed that will next to never be used out side of the two weeks of the Olympics.

If the city of Brisbane serious does go for the Olympics a renovated Gabba with expanded capacity would be by far the best option & with the addition of the soon to be built cross river rail running past the Gabba for improved stadium access for patrons.

Thoughts?

Thoughts

I'll wait for the fumblers to be happy as pigs in shit at the thought if a new 80k oval stadium .
Why because then fumbles can have a large stadium .
Which is completely laughable considering the dummy spits & rants over Syd stadium upgrades .

Will clearly highlight the hypocrisy of this mob

You still can’t past that little man syndrome can you!

It was your mob ranting and raving for years over the perth and Adelaide stadiums and in a melt down after the contractor from Allianz stadium lend lease pulled out & blamed the scg and afl for it

Now try and stick to topic and reality

IMO I agree with leeroy, upgrade the Gabba, increase capacity....a few more bars for fans to hide and mask the attendances and everybody should be happy.
There are lies, damn lies and then there are ratings.

I just don't see a need for another stadium. Spruce up the Gabba a bit - holds enough I would feel - is what it is. An 80000 seat stadium would simply not get used to any real capacity requiring 800000. They could play SoO maybe - the odd AFL final if Lions in.

On Capper's note - the stadium being built/upgraded is for the Olympics not for AFL - AFL and Cricket may benefit but the driver here is getting the Olympics which they hope to have financial and social benefits to the state. Whichit may. Many NSW people complained about there dollars being spent on the Sydney stadiums - even NRL people on here thought demolishing both was over kill. And many in QLD are also stating the Olympics bid is a waste also by the way.... well so I have been hearing.

80k Stadium would be useless,

If they were to do it, 60k would be more ideal.

(big stadiums look good) but to the punters viewing it is $hit house.

Lots of Pies fans also in SEQ. Also gives national coverage to Qld. Will be a big crowd and with the Lions doing well ... should be plenty of Lions supporters there. A great get for QLD.

Plus, the pies fans from interstate would be coming anyway for a clash between the two but many more now with it being made into a school holiday trip.

If they built an 80,000 seat oval stadium in Brisbane. It would probably end up being converted into a rectangular stadium anyway.

Just look at what is happening with ANZ. AFL is effectively being locked out of the biggest stadium in NSW forever once it is converted into a state of the art rectangular stadium.

Plenty of the traditional Victorian clubs Collingwood, Essendon, Richmond etc...have large support levels all up the coast of Qld as well. It was a good move from the AFL as many families do travel up to the SE Qld to holiday and visit family for the extended brake
