Wills may or may not have seen the aboriginals play their version of keepings off.
He certainly had much contact with mobs in 3 colonies.
He had very good relationships with Australian natives and was responsible for promoting their sporting ability both in Australia and overseas, in fact he formed, trained and toured with the first aboriginal cricket team.
And this was after most of his family were killed in a battle with the natives.

Wills was a great sportsman, he was also obsessive and not prone to considering anyone else’s opinion, which in the end, when he was pretty much ostracised, led to his demise.
Mob football has played in some areas and not in others and the style of play differed signicantly, in some areas a high catch was common in others it wasn’t, in some areas it wasn’t reported as not being played at all.
Wills wrote profusely, to anyone and everyone, many mentions about aboriginal sporting skills but no
mention of aboriginal football.
One contributing factor of this mythical contributing belief is the high marking was a direct result of the aboriginal game, but this was not a feature of Victorian rules until several decades after its formation.
Another is that several Murray river mobs word for catch was very similar to mark, but catching the ball in Victorian Rules was initially referred to as a fair catch, as it was in several other early ball games, mark came from making or leaving a mark from where you would take a free kick, it evolved later. Still has a couple of uses in Australian rules. Taking a catch and “standing on the mark, going over the mark, off his mark etc.
Let me sum up; No evidence Wills ever saw indigenous game. No evidence anglofl was based on anything other than European codes. To say anglofl based on Marn Grook is wrong.

Except that there were no European “codes” at that time, there was a whole lot of ball games played in a whole of schools that varied in the rules depending on room available and who wa running them.
Victorian Rules was codified BEFORE the other codes had developed. They had their origins when the schools tried to have a uniform set of rules for intra schools competition, both soccer and rugby originated from there.
Wills had tried to do the same at rugby previously and failed.

Codified football

Far be it for me to disagree, but I was specifically writing about the codification of rules, not formation of football clubs which is another subject or individual schools writing their own rules.

Blackheath “old boys” were formed in 1958 specifically to play football against the “young boys” of Blackheath school and in the early years that is what happened.

Up until the meeting at the Freemasons tavern in London 1863, there were not standard rules. This meeting was specifically called to “frame a code of laws that would embrace the best and most acceptable points of all the various methods of play under the one heading of "football".” The initial meeting established the Football Association.

There were several subsequent meetings, of which Blackheath was certainly vocal, with much disagreement. Oddly enough the biggest argument was not about running with the ball, but hacking, hacking was the practise of kicking the player with ball. Blackheath strongly supported it.

At the sixth meeting which established the first codified Rules of soccer (12/1863) Blackheath withdrew because the new rules clearly made hacking illegal.

Several others supported Blackheath and also withdrew. This was the football schism that split the codes.

However there was still no consensus between The Hacking teams on what rules to play by when they played each other, and games were mainly in house playing by their own rules.

It was not until 1871 that Richmond Football Club called a meeting to standardise the rugby type rules. Although the initial meeting, 12/1870, established the Rugby Football Union, the first agreed rules were not established until June 1871, written by 3 lawyers who were ex rugby students. There was still a bit of angst amongst the clubs hence the lawyers.

Hacking was included up until about 1889, but I cant find my reference to that date, so memory might fail.

Ironically, because their old boys wrote them, Rugby Football club refused to join the union until 1890 because of the hacking issue, not a gentlemanly practise.

Blackheath were responsible for 2 major events in football, they led the split that evolved into the 2 big football codes and, something they are not given much credit for, they introduced the passing game, which is the major method of moving the ball, before this rugby was a kick and chase or run game.
