Global Rapid Rugby

Post by Quolls2019 »

Global Rapid Rugby
GRR was formed and started operating in 2018 as World Series Rugby son to change to Global Rapid Rugby for 2019.

GRR was formed, and primarily backed, by Andrew Forrest as a direct consequence of the expulsion of Western Force from the Super Rugby Competition.

2019 was a warm up (Showcase) year with a 5 team 2 conference fixture with Western Force playing in both.

GRR is scheduled to officially start next year with an 8 team competition, with the Five 2019 teams and three as yet unannounced sides:
Western Force
South China Tigers
Asia Pacific Dragons
Fiji
Samoa
Possibilities to make up the numbers include Malaysia and Hawaii.

The fixture has not yet been published but it appears that it will directly compete with Super Rugby in the Australasian Area.

Part of it’s mission is:

• Our vision is to create a growing international rugby competition that enriches its communities.
• We are progressive – we disrupt, and originate (what we do is copied by others).
• We seek new markets – for sport, for growth, for our platforms and offerings.”

Commercial translation: this means war.

Global Rapid Rugby from the onset has said that expansion to new territories will be key.

“Expansion is a key part of our planning and in 2020 we will look to the east coast of Australia, representation from New Zealand (either playing from a NZ base or potentially in Asia), as well as Japan and Hawaii. With interest throughout the region already high, further growth is anticipated to come from countries including China, India, the UAE, Sri Lanka and Korea. Investment in China and India will start immediately, developing rugby in schools and communities, establishing player and coach pathways and engaging the fan base.”
Oh no, not China and India!,

Several rules are different than Union including shorter halves, a special 9 point try and changes to turnover rules, line outs and possession and kicking in the 22 yard zone.

Are the changes sufficient enough to warrant GRR to be another but separate code than Union.

Will it be successful enough to expand the forum to AFL vs NRL vs FFA vs ARU vs GRR?

Will it start next year?

will it be successful?

How do we determine success?

Based on the amount of posts on soccer and Super Rugby, not a lot, Will any body care?
There are lies, damn lies and then there are ratings.
Rugby league, Australias most popular game in some of North Eastern Australia.

Yes they are, makes me wonder how long they can last.
But, but some of the rules being introduced could make the game play as signicantly different as when league broke from union.

I dislike the tournament>>
the quality is low and players from these countries are all fringe players..
the money for this tournament to succeed in these vast counties would be enormous long term
for it to ever compete with Super Rugby..

Mr Forrest is giving it a good crack,

just do not understand where all this effort was when the Force were playing..
