There is no doubting the popularity of SOO in the non Rugby League states, and the Perth attendance was fantastic and now holds, not by much, the Optus record.
I think there are several reasons for it, including some great promotional work by the NRL and they are marketed as events more than a game and we all should be aware that Melbourne audiences love an event.
It is a mute point but I don’t think the attendance or popularity would be maintained if the series was not shared between cities. Nor do I believe that SOO has led or will lead to an increased interest of the code in the non RL cities, I could be mistaken.

2015, 91,513 only the AFL grand final had a greater attendance
2018 , 87,122 8 Melbourne AFL games exceeded the SOO attendance
2006, 54,833 (Docklands) 18 AFL games had a higher attendance
Thanks quolls, a very clear inoffensive and seemingly intelligent presentation. However it appears you select your data very carefully and conveniently leave out tv ratings figures.

Why?

Do the tv ratings make you .... a little emotional?

Conveince has nothing to do with it, just the facts, and my posts in this forum are about crowds.
Appears to me there are enough comments and intense discussion on TV ratings without me contributing.
And there is much disagreement these days (and here) about what counts and what doesn’t and until device streaming is incorporated I am not sure any figures are accurate, either way.

I admit that The same could be said about attendances, I think that only paying customers should count, including members that attend and corporate boxes and their guests, no freebies, kids let in free, employees , officials, contractors and the like, just the ones who have paid or had someone pay for them to attend.

87 thousand at the MCG in the nineties would suggest otherwise.

Almost 25 years on and interest seems to have been maintained in Melbourne. And 99% of these games have been played in just 2 venues/states. once again interest levels have been maintained. But who to say that showing it at more venues wont increase the popularity? with 3 to 4 million people watching why wouldn't they.

Just two more sleeps :thumbleft:

As I said, mute point, if, and it won’t happen, all SOO games were played in Melbourne, or Perth for that matter, the attendances would fall. Pointless discussion, and statement (mine) for that matter because it won’t happen.
My intended point was that inspite of the phenomenal success of SOO it does not appear to have increased the popularity of League in general and based on last weeks attendance, perhaps the opposite in the home states.

Another mute point, I would like the AFL reintroduce origin, I use to enjoy it, but I doubt whether that will happen either.
