There needs to be a no dickhead policy like Craig Bellamy has at the Storm.
Is funny how a rugby league club in AFL heartland seems to be showing the best example of how a club should be run when is comes to player conduct.

You would think that would be across the board!
would be a combination of sponsors just not renewing wanting their product to be seen in a different location or group of crowd!

NRL chief fears de Belin scandal could cost game 'hundreds of millions'
By Sam Phillips
April 19, 2019 — 3.34pm

NRL chief executive Todd Greenberg fears off-field incidents such as the sexual assault case against Jack de Belin could cost the game "hundreds of millions of dollars" in fees paid by broadcasters to televise the competition, explosive court documents reveal.

As de Belin awaits a decision in his Federal Court challenge of the ARL Commission's "no fault" stand down policy, the financial toll of the code's summer of off-field scandals has been spelled out by the governing body.

While NRL chief operating officer Andrew Abdo said the code had lost $10 million in sponsorship, Greenberg used his sworn affidavit to outline concerns that the game could pay a significant price when it came to renegotiating its next broadcast rights deal.

In defending the new stand down policy, Greenberg detailed conversations in which he said executives from Nine Entertainment and News Corp, which owns Foxtel, told him the next broadcast deal could be impacted dramatically by the de Belin saga.

“During both face to face meetings and telephone conversations they each said words to the effect that they were concerned that the charges laid against Mr de Belin would have a negative effect of the upcoming season’s rating and would significantly dilute our future broadcast values,” Greenberg’s affidavit said.

A downturn in ratings will ultimately lead to lowering of the value of the broadcast rights, which has the potential to cause losses to the NRL in the hundreds of millions of dollars.

The present five-year television deal is worth $1.8thillion and expires in 2022. Greenberg said he feared a slide in ratings could be catastrophic for the NRL when it came to negotiating a new deal for the 2023 season and beyond.

“Broadcast revenue is the major revenue source of the NRL competition," Greenberg’s affidavit said.

“A downturn in ratings will ultimately lead to lowering of the value of the broadcast rights, which given the length of the broadcast contracts has the potential to cause losses to the NRL in the hundreds of millions of dollars.”

Abdo, meanwhile, revealed a $10 million loss – split between four separate sponsorship deals totalling $2.6 million and grassroots sponsorships worth $7.5 million over the next three years – had been incurred in the weeks after de Belin was charged with aggravated sexual assault in December. De Belin has pleaded not guilty.

Abdo also feared a further $8 million could be lost through six sponsorship deals up for renewal at the end of this year.

“I consider that the renewal of these agreements would have been very difficult in the present circumstances had not the NRL addressed sponsor concerns by implementing the stand down policy,” Abdo said in his affidavit.

“I base this opinion on the reaction of other sponsors or potential sponsors discussed above and, additionally, upon a communication received from (one) of the parties whose contract ends in 2019.”

Abdo also said he had been unable to have a conversation with new sponsors without the disastrous off-field player behaviour of the summer being raised.

“Even with the policy change implemented it is my opinion that we have suffered significant setbacks in the ability to commercialise our available sponsorship assets for the next 6-12 months because of the impact of the recent serious player behaviour incidents,” Abdo said.

“I cannot have a conversation with a current or prospective sponsor without this matter being raised.

“This will place us under financial pressure to achieve set revenue budgets for the 2019 and 2020 seasons, given that once the season kicks off, the majority of sponsorship properties linked to broadcast exposure decline as the rounds progress.”

Greenberg said the overwhelming feedback from sponsors was that "permitting players facing serious criminal charges like Mr de Belin to participate in the NRL Competition would from their own perspective damage both the reputation of the NRL Competition and their own brands".

He added: "A general decline by the NRL Competition in its attractiveness to sponsors will also in my view damage the future value of broadcast rights of the NRL Competition as this will impact negatively on the ability of the broadcasters to sell advertising and sponsorship to its broadcasters."

The NRL's outlining of the financial toll of off-field incidents comes as it emerged that de Belin had been selected as one of 32 of the game's most marketable players and offered a direct contract from League Central under the NRL's player marketing fund.

After the NSW State of Origin forward was charged, the NRL pulled their contract offer.

“The NRL after the charge made the decision to no longer offer Mr de Belin a contract because of the damage caused to the reputation of the NRL Competition if he was publicly held out as one of its chosen representatives,” Greenberg’s affidavit said
Surely, this will not effect code expansion?
Perth are primed ... Apparently.
SA still don't have a team.
Brisbane should have at least a couple more teams.
And the promise of a comparable women's game to the AFLW's within a couple years will still happen, surely.
Surely this is all budgeted for?
