Canadians like Rugby League a lot more than Chinese like AFL.

Which is the best football code? Here you can have it out with other football fans.

Well RL has far more international presence than derpball so yeh it's worked a treat .
& brawls are a rarity these days .
So you get one unco point for being useless
if international presence is based on excitement of the game then soccer is the most exciting game in the world.

Clearly it isnt
Well those Canadian fans seem pretty excited watching that Rugby League match. ;)

Ice hockey, lacrosse, maple syrup... and rugby league?

Canada is embracing the greatest game of all on the back of the popularity of pioneer club, the Toronto Wolfpack.

So much so, that all of the Wolfpack’s Championship games will now be broadcast live across the North American country on GameTV.

Despite failing to secure promotion to the Super League last season courtesy of a 4-2 loss to the London Broncos in the play-off game at their Lamport Stadium, they’ve built a strong supporter base.

They progressed to the Championship undefeated from League One in their inaugural season, and then finished in first-place in the Championship before the Broncos broke their hearts in a boilover.

Expectation is high that the Wolfpack will earn promotion in 2019.

Jeff Hagan, the Wolfpack’s Director of Broadcast Production and Distribution, is hopeful that success coupled with the newly announced extensive coverage will result in a much larger domestic support-base.

“As a valued broadcast partner Game TV have player an integral role in our success since our first season,” he said on the club website.

“In showing Wolfpack home and away games live, GameTV showcase our product and players, helping us to grow our game and inspire youngsters across Canada into rugby.

“We thank GameTV for giving our growing fanbase in Canada the ability to enjoy every minute of action from the 2019 Betfred Championship, while also allowing sports bars to show our games.”

The Wolfpack is even looking at further growth outside of Canada.

Promising to take games to European capital cities if the club secures promotion to the English top-flight competition.

“I think next year we’ll be able to hit some of the other European cities,”

Toronto’s majority shareholder David Argyle said.

“The will is to go to Belgrade, the will is to go to Dublin, the will is to go to Copenhagen and other European cities. To do a game in Spain would be fantastic.”

The club has already boasted former NRL players of the calibre of Reni Matua, Fuifui Moimoi, Ashton Sims, Josh McCrone, Darcy Lussick and Chase Stanley over the past two years. And the quality would only improve dramatically if they were to make the step up to the Super League and enjoy the financial rewards that come with it.

Definitely, a stadium upgrade would help their cause too.

I've been watching some of the Wolfpack videos.
And fan engagement like this says it all.

Yeah the ground reminds me a bit like Leichardt Oval with transport issues.

I guess it is one step at a time with upgrades.

Funny how AFL fans are all too scared to reply in this post.

Well Canada is bigger in population than Australia and New Zealand combined.
So it is still a decent sized market that likes Gridiron Football.

Gridiron is one of the most well known sports in the world, easily the most popular sport in the USA which is one of the biggest countries in the world, and by far the most influential country in the world. Yet it hasnt expanded anywhere near as far as RU, soccer, Cricket, Basketball or RL.

Can you explain why?

Well it has expanded professionally to Canada. So the fact Gridiron Football has a professional league in a neighbouring nation is a lot more than AFL has.

I think it will expand to London eventually too. They sellout exhibition games regularly when they play there.

so why hasnt this increadibly popular game known world-wide and originating in an increadibly influential country expanded anywhere near as far as the other sports i've mentioned?

Come on, you're the guy obsessed with international expansion. Surely you can discuss this

Is because it is a costly sport to play. The pads and helmet etc are not cheap.

Soccer and Rugby codes require a lot less gear to play.

Why has AFL not been able to spread to a neighboring country like Gridiron has though?

Rugby League has been able to spread from Australia to New Zealand but not AFL. Why is this?

Facts are facts. AFL has always had no success getting a following in other countries compared to other codes.
