Giants chairman Tony Shepherd believes it’d be “worthwhile” revisiting the Cost of Living Allowance (COLA) for Sydney-based clubs, claiming it’d not only help his club retain talent but also attract experienced AFL staffers.

And Shepherd says the Giants are working on a strategy with the AFL to help boost crowds at their Sydney-based home games, with their 2022 attendances “a long way off the pace”.

Shepherd said his club was “working closely” with the AFL to “bring those crowds back up to the level we expect”, including an investment boost in community footy, as well as the marketing strategy and timing of games.

“You‘ve got to optimise everything to get the people to come to the stadium. Giants Stadiums is a lovely, great little stadium so it’s just a question of working out the marketing and the timing and ensuring the growth in community football – which was growing quite strongly before the pandemic but now slowed down during the pandemic – gets the attention that it needs,” he said.

“Like, our boys went out to the schools in western Sydney for the first time in two and a half years last week. We‘d have a group going out to western Sydney schools every week in previous years.”

Shepherd confirmed the Giants were “having a look at” the possibility of playing a home game at the SCG against a big Victorian club, like Richmond or Collingwood.

i agree with the points..

it is not only hard for Players to join to high rents and property prices / the level of living in sydney..
it is hard to get coaching and staff to sydney due to all these circumstances from say Adel / perth and melb

when they can get the same pay and be way better off financially

The lack of community engagement the past 2 and 1/2 years is very unfortunate in the schools of western Sydney. Talk of moving Giants games to the SCG is just madness. Tony Shepherd has an obvious conflict of interest there.

that is a crazy suggestion to do so.. it would concede defeat on west sydney.

it would prob entice more interstate fans to the city from other clubs, i do not think it would do much more

the issue is 2 fold
in Western Sydney theres few

sthn ex pat mongs to pad the crowds with sthn mongs who venture up to watch their teams drop & giggle at homebush ,
there are also few snobs who used to follow toffball out that way who have abandoned yawnion for singlets & tight shorts.

The Swines live off the support of both of the above in their eastern suburbs/ lower north shore bubble . The Aflol way over estimated the appeal of their game across Sydney not understanding the place well enough , its history , its sporting culture.

and there is no fix
time has not broadened derpballs appeal much , to other areas in Sydney & if the leg ups & premierships gifted to the swines in the last 40 years has not achieved this

nothing will..

paywall

i'll say they've delivered nothing
they're lucky the territory's chief minister is a fumbletard loving twat otherwise the deal would not be extended. Most of the people at midgets games here are locals

few visitors filling hotels , bars restaurants etc like we were told they would to justify the spend . But a mate of mine who works for the ACT Chamber of commerce told me they contribute almost nothing to the local economy
wow

A mate of yours? I think he's a real fumbler like you. The real question is how much have they helped clubs in the ACT - Belconnen, Ainslie, Eastlake, Gungahlin, Tuggeranong Valley, ANU, ADFA, Molonglo and Woden (and maybe Queanbeyan, Googong, Batemans Bay, Goulburn, Yass, Murrumbateman, Southern Cats [Cooma] and Cootamundra) who are in NSW but play in the Canberra league)?

You and your mate wouldn't know that. You've never been to Football Park in Woden, Greenway - heck you've never even been to Manuka!
