AFL China match would have to be the sporting flop of the year.

Post by NRL&NFLweLaughATafl »

Without a doubt there was no bigger sporting flop.

There was so much hype -
The whole of China would watch it.
The stadium would sell out.
China would get it's own AFL team.
The promotion was massive saying AFL is converting China to their game.

Instead the stadium looked less than half empty with mostly expat white Aussies making up the numbers.

Not only that, the stadium looked like something out of a war torn country.

Was a huge embarrassment for AFL and would have given other codes like Soccer and Rugby a few giggles.

Yeah I didn’t like the concept at all. Stupid idea. Port were apparently happy getting what they wanted out of it and was apparently cost neutral but I think the whole idea was ridiculous. I know Rl we’re talking about a similar thing but at least they didn’t progress it.

Think it is port who are doing this and I think it is a 3 year thing ? Think it has been profitable for port but I don’t like it.

We're still waiting for the Chinese ratings number that was predicted to be the most people in history to ever watch an AFL game. As that much hyped announcement has never come we can assume it flopped on Chinese TV.

Financially the event broke even. So after a massive upheaval to get two teams over there, get the ground up to scratch and all the infrastructure in place they made exactly $0.00. I call that a flop.

They announced a sell out crowd before the game. Unfortunately it looked half full and it was a case of spot the Chinaman in the crowd. The reasoning was that fumblehouse gave away thousands of freebies to the locals but they stayed at home and played mah-jong instead. That's a flop.

The only up-side is the potential for the future. Maybe more Chinese sponsors will come on board. Maybe more Chinese will watch on TV. Maybe more Chinese will actually use their freebies and turn up to the ground. Maybe my aunty is my uncle.

I predict they will play one or two more games there and will then be frog marched out of town like they were in NZ. You read it here first!

I think port were happy with their sponsor they got. I think the suns also got extra from their Chinese sponsor.

But I don’t like it. Whilst I encourage the afl to try new things, tans indeed this was not their inistivd but port Adelaide’s ... And fir that it served their purpose ... I would like to see it wrapped up.

Yes... was a silly move. Whilst it may have bought in sponsors for port it was short sighted by the afl I think. People in shanti didn’t even know it was on lol.

the afl & clubs made money there so how was it a flop?

its not like the total seasons ratings and crowds were down
the NRLOL were caught out fudging crowd figures again that's after discounting tickets for finals to $15 to free and still had to fudge the numbers
& the codes commission couldn't even get a bank loan to pay operating costs

the NRLOLs year has been a total flop
Australian sporting sponsorship
AFL excess of $50m
A league $30 million plus
ARU $27 million
NRLOL $25 million

Oh dear, it's that time of the day when the meds are wearing off.

Ok link: Port said they broke even - which is afl speak for woops - we lost money - flop.

Add RL crowds & ratings together and afl crowds & ratings together & RL once again is king of Australia. Flop to afl.

Now go and see Wilma for your night meds top up and chomp into a brontosaurus bugger lol.
