Third tier clubs concern over funding cuts
 GARETH WALKER  12/09/2021

There is a growing concern and frustration among Betfred League 1 clubs about the level of funding cuts that will be applied by the RFL to the third tier next season.
Clubs at all levels will face a reduction in central funding in 2022 as part of a lower TV deal, with London Broncos last week announcing a move to a part-time squad on the back of it.
But it is League 1 that will be hit hardest proportionately, with some clubs working on a projected 78 per cent funding cut ahead of the final confirmation from the RFL.
Coventry Bears owner Alan Robinson confirmed publicly that such a reduction could mean the end of his club as a professional operation, and others have since supported his view that the move is short-sighted.
Rochdale Hornets Chairman Andy Mazey has criticised the latest restructure proposals of two top divisions of 10, saying it will solve none of the sport’s underlying problems.
“The more you sit down and think hard about the 2×10’s, format or indeed any interim or short-term proposal, you realise it doesn’t address the issues with the sport at the highest level,” Mazey said.
“Once again it feels like we are kicking the can down the road and are simply shuffling the same old cards in a slightly different way in hope that things might change for the better.
“The second division is still the second division, whatever number of clubs it has and whatever you want to call it.
“Clubs in Super League pulling in 2-3,000 for games is utterly embarrassing.
“Super League’s inability to grow individually as clubs and collectively over a number of decades – whilst frittering away millions of pounds of the game’s valuable broadcast income on overseas coaches and players, rather than investing sufficiently in infrastructure, youth and communities or marketing the product adequately – is the real problem that needs solving.
“Does two 10s with a reduced Super League at the top of the pyramid with the same product, stadiums, clubs and players resolve anything?
“What’s happening at the base of the professional pyramid with people like Alan Robinson at Coventry busting a gut on a small amount of central funding (less than the average wage of a journeyman Super League player) to grow the sport is not the problem, yet some would argue that is the case.
“If it was an equitable cut – say 30 percent across the board – it would be more understandable. Instead the top are losing around 28 percent and we’re looking at 78 percent.
“A lot of people at this level of the game are very frustrated about it.”
Hunslet coach Alan Kilshaw fears the importance of the third tier is being underestimated by certain figures within the sport.
He said: “I feel there was a bit more of an uproar when the Championship clubs didn’t know what was happening, but that seems to have gone quiet now they know what they are doing.
“The League 1 clubs seem to have been left alone and there’s a lot of self-interest in the game.
“The way I see it, it will be very difficult to keep the players we have with the budgets that are being talked about.
“There are Championship clubs taking advantage of this – a couple of my better players have offers from there and they’ve had deadlines put on them.
“But we need a strong third tier because it’s a pyramid of players pushing through.
“We’ve got an idea of how we would approach it if the budgets are small, which will be younger, local players that we look to develop over the course of the season.
There are lies, damn lies and then there are ratings.

Ottawa Aces leave Canada permanently.

The aces are moving back to England (they own the old Hempstead license).
This means they will not compete in the NARL or compete in League 1 as Ottawa.

Ottawa Aces Statement

Friends and supporters, as we continue to navigate COVID-19 and the considerable affect it has on all of our lives, we want to share an update on the Ottawa Aces. It is with heavy hearts we must announce our club will be forced to permanently relocate back to England, and a more stable operating environment. In the coming weeks, our new permanent location in England will be revealed. Due to this move, all season ticket membership deposits will be refunded.

We launched our club’s move from Hemel Hempstead to Ottawa on March 9, 2020. A few days later, the pandemic began its spread within Canada. In essence, we have lived the entirety of our existence amid the pandemic. Last season, we were revving up to play our inaugural campaign, when we were forced to pull out due to the ongoing proliferation of the pandemic.

Let it be known, a wide range of solutions have been explored, with a view to keeping this club in Ottawa. As well, numerous factors were considered. These factors included but were not limited to; consultation with both the governments of the United Kingdom, and Canada, and the projected ease and availability of travel options next year.

Unfortunately, despite the extreme motivation, significant financial investment, and the heart and soul of our staff being poured into the task, it has proven to be a bridge too far.

We would like to thank our sponsors, Ottawa Sports and Entertainment Group, and most of all our fans in the Ottawa region for their steadfast support. We hope one day professional Rugby League can return to Canada, and specifically TD Place Stadium.

Ottawa Aces relocate to Cornwall
2nd November 2021 James Gordon League 1 12

Professional rugby league will go to Cornwall for the first time after they were given the go ahead to play in League 1 in 2022.
Following Ottawa Aces decision to permanently relocate to the UK, Eric Perez has taken the ‘licence’ they purchased from Hemel Stags to the south west.
They will play at the 4,000-capacity home of Penryn RFC, the Memorial Ground.

Cornwall RLFC director, Colin Groves, said: “This is a landmark day in the history of Rugby League.
“For the first time in our sports history we are truly a national game. Cornwall is a place that was made for Rugby League and, finally, after 126 years, we are proud to bring one of the most exiting team sports on the planet here.
“There is no doubt in our minds that Cornwall has a tremendous talent pool and we will unearth many Cornish rugby league heroes.

“This is a club that represents all of Cornwall, a true regional club. We are buzzing at the prospect of building something special here.”
The coronavirus pandemic halted Ottawa’s plans to join the RFL league structure for 2021, after they had recruited a large portion of their squad.
They announced last week that the fall out from that required them to ditch plans to play in Canada, and instead relocate to the UK to compete.
RFL chairman, Simon Johnson, added: “The RFL Board have approved the club’s request to relocate as it takes the Betfred League One competition, and the sport of Rugby League, into a new area, which shares many of the characteristics of the traditional Rugby League heartlands in the north, and has a renowned passion for rugby.
“This is an exciting opportunity to take our great sport to a completely new audience in a beautiful part of the country, and for our clubs and supporters to embrace that.”
Cornwall will become the 11th side in League 1 for 2022, alongside: Coventry, Doncaster, Hunslet, Keighley, London Skolars, North Wales, Oldham, Rochdale, Swinton, West Wales.

North American Rugby League
Looking shakier by the day.

23/11/21
DESPITE the loss of its New York team and its entire western conference, the North American Rugby League has relaunched for 2022.
In a statement released on social media late on Monday, the mooted new competition said it would field teams representing six North American markets from May until September next year, naming five of those cities.
The announcement tallies with our information more than a month ago that the competition was down to four teams after Toronto Wolfpack announced a Canada Cup with that number. New York Freedom withdrew over the weekend and several Western Conference teams have defected to the California Rugby League.
The surviving teams would appear to be the Wolfpack, DC Slayers, Atlanta Rhinos and Cleveland RL. A New York team will replace Freedom, the NARL statement indicated, and a sixth market was to be confirmed.
That suggests key NARL recruits Boston 13s are no longer completely committed to the concept.
“Throughout the season, every team will play in a weekly centralised host city, giving fans the opportunity to see all the action the NARL has to offer,” the statement said.
“The NARL plans to expand to six additional cities and introduce a women’s league.

New York Freedom have announced they have ended their partnership with the North

23/11/21

“”American Rugby League.

New York pull out of North American Rugby League

Freedom had been one of the more active clubs ahead of the new league’s planned inaugural season in 2021.

It was eventually shelved due to the impact of the pandemic, with hopes the league will start next year.

A club statement said: “As of November 19, New York Freedom RL has ended its partnership with the NARL.

“We look forward to continuing the development of Rugby League in the US & will provide more details soon.“ “

New York were expected to join the English League 1 (with Ottawa) in 2022, they are not included in the 2022 fixture and there is little information on their status.

America review

Rugby league in America once again looks to be locked in a civil war.

Less than a decade since the USA Rugby League wrestled control from the AMNRL following a breakaway, they have called in help from the International Rugby League federation to assist with governance.

USARL Chair Peter Illfield, said:“On behalf of the USARL Inc. Board of Directors and all stakeholders of Rugby League in the USA, issues with the national structure were submitted by members and other parties as concerns that may inhibit development, expansion and the overall sustainability of Rugby League in the USA.

“We are thankful the IRL has responded to our request for assistance that hopefully provides satisfactory compliance, acceptable reform and mutual alignment for all stakeholders who contribute to the growth and development of Rugby League in the USA.

“The USARL Inc. will commit to a fully inclusive and participatory role in a USARL-IRL joint process, and agree to support and collaborate in the reform agenda.”

A consortium had hoped to enter a New York team in to League 1, following the lead of Toronto Wolfpack.

The RFL announced in 2019 that Ottawa Aces had been accepted, but the New York owners were encouraged to look at working towards entry in 2021.

The pandemic then pushed this back to 2022, though there has been little discussion since.

Earlier in 2021, the New York Rugby League digital assets were handed over to New York Freedom as they were announced as part of the new NARL.

It remains to be seen whether the NARL will come to fruition.

More popular than AFL on twitter, that really is something.
Now if you could only get decent crowds to actually watch your more popular twitter sport, sponsorship and members, I’m sure you’d be well on the way.
