The NRL is set to finish the season on a high after stunning financial results
Rugby league boss Peter V'landys has successfully steered the NRL through a financial crisis
Senior Sports Writer

7:43PM December 1, 2020

The NRL is set to emerge from the COVID-19 crisis better than anyone could have imagined thanks to savage costs cuts, a late-season surge of people through the gates and a tsunami of gaming revenue.

The ARL Commission is set to discuss in detail the year’s financials at a meeting on Wednesday but The Australian understands the deficit for the 2020 season could be less than $20 million, a remarkable result when you consider the doom and gloom that enveloped the code earlier in the season.

There were fears at one point that the sport would be decimated by the impact of COVID but the remarkable work of chair Peter V’landys and chief executive Andrew Abdo has ensured rugby league will finish this season with its head well and truly above water – and begin next in better shape than expected.

Kayo is your ticket to the best sport streaming Live & On-Demand. New to Kayo? Get your 14-day free trial & start streaming instantly >

The result has been achieved despite revenue dropping by more than $100 million over the past 12 months – in 2019 it was $528 million, this year it is believed to be just over $400 million.

A large portion of the drop in revenue is a result of the discounts handed to the game’s broadcast partners. It is understood the Nine Network and Foxtel were given savings of around $50 million this season after tense negotiations between television bosses and rugby league powerbrokers over a reduced schedule and the impact an absence of crowds would have on the product.

It is believed wagering revenue played a significant part in mitigating the damage. Multiple sources confirmed to The Australian that wagering revenue was at least $8 million and potentially $10 million above forecasts.

The results will only enhance V’landys’ standing – he is already considered by many to be the finest sports administrator in the country. A year ago he talked to the game’s stakeholders about the potential to earn more money from wagering on the game’s premium products and he has been true to his word, the influx of cash coming at the ideal time given the way COVID has ravaged the bottom line of all sports across the country.

The damage was further offset thanks to a late deluge of money from gates being thrown open for the grand final. Crowds were also able to attend the State of Origin series but those games took place in November, meaning they are likely to be included in next year’s accounts.

What makes the result even more remarkable is that the NRL gave the clubs more cash than they have at any point in their history as they looked to ensure they finished the season with 16 solvent teams.

The alternative would have been a disaster given the code is committed to providing eight games a week for the broadcasters. The commission is yet to finalise payments for the clubs moving forward, largely due to the fact that they are yet to strike a deal with the players for the next two seasons.

The NRL initially offered a pay cut of 10 per cent in 2021 but the union responded by asking that it only be five per cent. The parties are believed to be close to a deal, although the vast majority of clubs and players have already been paid for the month of November.

It means that the clubs will have to claw that money back from the players once a deal is struck. The NRL’s strong financial results are likely to ease concerns over a range of issues moving forward, including the prospect of expansion.

There were fears the game would take years to overcome the lingering impact of COVID-19 and therefore would be reluctant to expand by adding a 17th team via southeast Queensland. However, the game’s leadership through the pandemic has meant that officials will finish the season with a degree of confidence that they can navigate any challenges in the future, even allowing for the introduction of another team in 2023.

The NRL has a line of credit available, although they are unlikely to need it given their robust returns in 2020. At the same time, the positive financial outcome is likely to pique the interests of private investors, who have been circling the code in recent months.

The ARL Commission has been investigating the potential of private equity investment given other sports around the world have sold stakes in their competitions.

NRL TV rights: Free-to-air networks queue up for slice of rugby league

In an unprecedented move, the NRL is considering a new TV rights model that is set to spark a major bidding war.

In an unprecedented move, the NRL is considering carving up the rugby league season program and engaging up to three free-to-air networks to televise rugby league matches in the next broadcast deal.

And the development, similar to that employed by the American NFL, has been met with immediate and united support from NRL club chief executives.

The ARL Commission is considering mixing up the rugby league landscape with rival networks to bid for NRL games, State of Origin, finals and the grand final.

With different games showing on separate free-to-air carriers, there is a chance that games could soon be telecast on Nine, Seven and Ten.

If the model is implemented, Channel 9’s longstanding monopoly over rugby league would end.

ARLC chairman Peter V’Landys revealed on Sunday that rugby league had “substantial interest” from multiple free-to-air stations.

While Fox Sports has five years left on its deal, the current free-to-air TV deal expires after next season with the NRL having already started top-level discussions with all networks.

“Peter, Andrew (Abdo, NRL CEO) and the commission will be trusted with achieving the best financial outcome for the sport,” said Souths CEO, Blake Solly. “But outside the best financial deal possible, I think there would be other benefits in having two or three FTA broadcasters.

“As rights holders they would immediately be invested in promoting the NRL, players and clubs to the biggest possible audience and this would help the sport keep and find new fans.
“The more broadcasters and outlets supporting the growth of the NRL competition and rugby league, the better for mine”.

Raiders CEO Don Furner added: “The more free-to-air coverage, the better for the game, particularly in other states. One-hundred per cent of people have free-to-air.

“It’s no wonder there is interest. Our game is fantastic to watch, it’s a fantastic TV product. We have faith in Peter maximising the best deal for the game.”

V’landys told The Big Sports Breakfast Weekend on Sky Sports Radio he was interested in sharing rugby league around the FTA channels.

“For the first time we have actually got substantial interest from other TV stations. Rugby league is in a good position to get a very good deal,” he said.

“That is one option to us – you might have two free-to-airs broadcasters. You may have three free-to-air broadcasters on different days on different nights – State of Origin, grand final, semi-finals. You can split them up into different packages.

“I have just been studying the NFL deal and they have about six or seven partners that do specific games. I can’t see why we can’t do that here. Exclusivity is going to be a lot more expensive this time around, being able to provide it to a number of parties.”

Asked would Australia have enough stations interested in covering NRL, V’landys said: “I believe so and each network has expressed interest.

“At the moment, because of the competition that the free-to-air channels have, they really do rely on news, sport and reality shows. You have Stan and Netflix that provide all the other dramas and comedies so the free-to-air, they have to attract people by their news, sport and reality and sport is very, very high on that list.

“That is why the free-to-air stations will certainly be interested is us because we are a rare commodity. I want to stress the people I want to look after are the fans and to make sure the fans have every opportunity to access rugby league.

“The free-to-air deal, not only is it financially beneficial to us but it’s also provides eyeballs. Free-to-air goes to every home whereas Foxtel goes to 27, 28 per cent of the market.

“So, for us, it’s very important for us to enable rugby league to be watched by as many people as possible.”

A number of senior rugby league figures have been shocked by Nine’s relentless push to promote the ratings-challenged rugby union on Stan while virtually ignoring any ads promoting the start of NRL season.

The Sunday Telegraph reported that Channel 7 boss James Warburton has also told network employees of a plan to axe cricket, prompting speculation his station wants NRL.

The NRL says the same thing every time yet still sticks with Channel 9 and Foxtel.

Channel 9 and Stan seem to be really promoting Rugby this year though. Seeing tv advertising and billboards daily for Rugby on Stan in Sydney at least. NSW Waratahs form to date is not helping thus far though it seems.

I would have thought that you people would be used to coming 2nd.

"Sical media was never where the AFL derived a "tribal" reputation from in the first place. That was always based on people going to matches and taking up memberships and showing actual support, not clicking likes on facebook or instagram."

Sour Grapes?

"The Broncos alone have amassed more followers than the AFL's Brisbane Lions, St Kilda FC and North Melbourne Kangaroos combined," :(/ :(/ :(/

"The most alarming fall however is the AFL's supposed powerhouse team; the Collingwood Magpies, who back in 2013 had more social media followers than any other club. Eight years on, and their online ranking has dropped to fifth with 250,000 less followers than the Brisbane Broncos. " a quarter of a million less followers

Top 5 clubs by followers:

1. Brisbane Broncos: 1,062,252

3. Warriors: 799,744

Amazing numbers for The Greatest Game of All!!!!! It'll certainly ruffle a few feathers from our southern friends who have never conceded year on year TV rating wins by RL. And who will no doubt squeal like stuck pigs about this one lolololoolool!!!!!!

What it does show is that NSW (particularly Sydney) & Qld people simply do not attend sport, all sport, in the numbers they do in the AFL states. That is not a tribal thing, it is a cultural thing. This study shows however that RL folk are just as invested in their teams, infact more so, than AFL folk.

The challenge is for RL to somehow capitalise on this support & monetise it through game attendance and memberships. I suspect it will never happen at the level of the southern states because..............well............I mean..............what else is there to do in the developing states lololololol!!!!!!!!!!

Its called the fucking truth. The AFLs tribal reputation stems from long before social media was a thing,

Its Samy Haidar trying to commercially justify something that has no tangible affect on the club beyond being liked by people. He did it last year on twitter before he got a job at nine.
Popularity has no effect :(/ yeah right   :mrgreen

Yep. Whatever way our fumbling friends want to play this one down it is a fantastic result for RL. These platforms are the fastest growing media in the world. They attract primarily young folk who are the future for all sports codes. To dominate the biggest local rival in such a way is incredible. Tremendous result!!!!!!!
