AFL BID TO TAKE CONTROL OF GABBA
The AFL is among a handful of organisations hovering to rip control of the Gabba from Stadiums Queensland, whose 18-year grip on the venue is now tenuous.

Wow
you would think Cricket QLD would have something to say about this..

there are only 11 AFL games per year.

QLD Bulls
Brisbane Heat
Aus Cricket team
all play games here..

crowds for the QLD bulls would be tiny. Cricket Australia would only play there a few times a year

The Brisbane Heat play 5 games per year.. not including finals
and last season actually had bigger crowds than Brisbane Lions with 11 games.
The Year they made the finals which = 6 games they had an Average off 33k

Australia usually play
1 TEST
1-2 ODI
1 T20

Doesn’t help the lions have been useless the last 10 or so years!

The Sixers and thunder would get similar to if not better crowds than the Sydney based nrl teams :)))

The lions get better than those as well

Nice attempt at a cheap shot at the lions but look at your own pathetic codes efforts first

its about management rights not sport performance.

The AFL already runs Docklands, branching out couldnt hurt the business. The NRL should look at getting management rights for the new SFS if it can.

difference is the AFL signed up to a BOOT project from the start with rights to the land and everything. Im not sure the NRL has the same powers over fixturing that the AFL does when it comes to club venues.

what bloody BUT BUT BUT!!!

The Melbourne teams play out of 2 stadiums

Sydney teams in the NRL play out of over 12 stadiums you complete idiot

would be hard for the NRL to push the agenda of what the AFL did with there clubs.

I have had it with your stupid spastic self

that makes zero sense most times.

Wasnt just the AFL that pushed this, the Victorian Government pushed it as well - as happened in WA with the WAFL/WA Gov - clubs going hand in hand for maintenance costs every couple of years wasnt going to be a great look, and the Hillsborough disaster in 1989 was a big driver in the lift in stadium standards, and therefore costs. Seating replaced terraces and hills and clubs moved to the MCG, Princes Park and Waverly.

But this is also partly possible because the AFL has the ultimate power over fixturing - clubs can and do make their own arrangements, but the AFL ultimately decides where clubs play. Im not sure if the NRL has this capability to dictate venues to the clubs

That said, having them go begging for training facilities and centres of excellence - all codes - isnt a great look either, and one that i cant believe even gets off the crowd with the government.
