Television ratings in China highlight potential for Port Adelaide’s China strategy
Michelangelo Rucci, The Advertiser
June 9, 2016 11:02am

PORT Adelaide now has the Chinese interested in Australian football having created a hook on China’s biggest television networks.

Ratings figures from the Power’s full-game telecasts to China reveal almost two million people are watching Port Adelaide’s weekly 30-minute show on CCTV. And the April 8 clash with Essendon drew the same audience while the April 23 match against Geelong broke all expectation with more than 3.5 million viewers.

This interest has prompted CCTV to extend its original agreement - to show at least three Port Adelaide games this season - to now show an AFL game from the home-and-away series each weekend. One in three games will feature the Power, making the coverage now total AFL exposure rather than just Port Adelaide.

Any finals in September featuring Port Adelaide also will be shown.

The ratings figures are delighting the AFL for the exposure the game — and the 18 AFL clubs, plus its sponsors — has in a new market. And the ratings are giving more impetus to Port Adelaide’s “China Strategy” that will step up in Shanghai later this month.

The business meetings in Shanghai on June 24 — with the full Power board to meet in China — will advance Port Adelaide’s mission to play an AFL game for premiership points in China next season.

Port Adelaide chief executive Keith Thomas seemed surprised by the strength of the ratings.

“We weren’t sure how they would be accepted by CCTV’s viewing audience,” Thomas said.

“We were hopeful of gaining an audience share of between one and two million viewers by our second broadcast game (against Geelong) but to achieve two million viewers for the first broadcast game (against Essendon) was very pleasing.

“But for me the real story is in the staggering growth from our first broadcast game to the second. To go from reaching approximately two million viewers to over 3.5 million the following game tells me there is a real appetite for our game in China.

“On these figures we estimate that by season’s end potentially 60 million Chinese viewers would have watched Port Adelaide on CCTV in 2016.”

AFL in China. Can you imagine how confused with all that prancing and fumbling they will be. =D> =D>

The language barrier will be hard enough then you have to explain to them why there are 3 goals too.

AFL just continues to be desperate.

No is more funny than anything. Because AFL is the only goal code in the world which rewards people for missing.

So who is really stupid lol.. Can you imagine Soccer, Hockey, Rugby Union, Grid Iron, Rugby League having extra side goals incase you miss?

Nope. Because they all realise it is very very dumb. And a huge joke like AFL in general. =D> =D>
