if you disregard the fact the AFL is shown on FTA AND Fox simultaneously, and the fact the biggest AFL games are at the end of the season, not in the middle of the season
Ok Fox usually gets 250k AVG on Friday nights
How much of that is in Melbourne ?
the FTA figure alone has to hit 400k
and get about 100k from fox just to equal it.

Yes there will be regular season game top this figure.

but it is a superb figure.. =D>
well given the ANZAC day game rated well over 300k, and more than half of the AFL's heartland lives in Melbourne, you would have to say the AFL rated near 550-600k for that game, well over last nights SOO

But I suppose if we are claiming one-off events indicates the overall popularity of a sport then then the olympics, the WC soccer, and the grandslam tennis, all show the AFL and RL are only minor sports in Australia

Oh boy..
Ok that's one game so far..

I am not saying an AFL game will not hit that mark or surpass it.
I am saying its a great achievement.

well done NRL

bring Collingwood and Essendon to Sydney and we will see how they rate.

never said it got near 100k

Rugby league is played in rectangle ground.
where the capacity is a lot smaller.

its bigger then the AFL GF (3 x Bigger)

therefore Being the Superior EVENT in AUSTRALIA

The Biggest SPORTING EVENT IN AUSTRALIA
your claim origin is the biggest event is BS. It gets smaller crowds and rates better because it compares to a non-primetime AFL GF. The AFL GF sells out within minutes, and could be sold out 2-3 times over if the capacity allowed. The SOO repeatedly struggles to sell-out, and certainly didnt last night

Just because you play it 3 times doesnt make it more popular. Otherwise lets simply add the crowds and ratings of all games played by both codes and see who is the most popular.

its an appropriate achievement for a marquee game, similar to ratings the AFL GF gets in Sydney and Brisbane

Why would an AFL club game involving two Melbourne teams rate high in Sydney?

The RL SOO is a great event but is out-drawn by the AFL GF. The RL SOO gets higher ratings, but only because the comparison is prime-time to non-prime-time.

Look at the highest rating programs each year. Tell me how many are shown in non-prime time?

There are many times more people home to watch TV at night, so going against better rating shows is irrelevant. All shows rate better at night than during the day. Thats why they call it prime time

basically none. The Australian Tennis final is a great example. It rated ok when played on Sunday arvo but is consistently one of the highest rating shows each year now it is in prime time

Could they do that every year??? Last time they had a big crowd at the G the next time they only got 50k. One off all good year in year out - well let's just say the shine would come off it very quickly!

prehaps they needs to start up a gimmick like the SOO is :\:
Australian sporting sponsorship
AFL excess of $50m
A league $30 million plus
ARU $27 million
NRLOL $25 million
