Disgraceful buy typical behaviour of rugby league supporters at the MCG last night. Shame on you. Show some respect you pigs. Worst fans of any code it's been said. Hard to disagree.

A touching moment of silence for the great Ron Clarke at the MCG was spoiled by groups of fans who cheered and yelled during a sombre tribute to one of Australia's greatest athletes.

Social media lit up in condemnation as a small group among the 90,000-plus crowd at Origin II couldn't be bothered keeping their mouth shut for just a few moments to honour Clarke's memory.

Instead, they yelled and carried on in a shameful display of disrespect that filtered through television microphones and around Australia.

Clarke died on Wednesday morning aged 78. He was a 17-time world-record holder and famously lit the flame at the 1956 Melbourne Olympics, held at the same ground as Wednesday night's epic Origin encounter.

That symmetry fell on deaf ears for some, who had scant regard for the Hall of Fame athlete and his legacy, which also included a long stint in politics where he was mayor of the Gold Coast.

Not surprisingly, Twitter reacted accordingly, with hundreds sinking the boot in as what should have been a wonderful moment was ruined by a minority of yobbos.

PREMIER Daniel Andrews has slammed fans’ disgraceful behaviour during a minute’s silence to honour the late Ron Clarke at the MCG last night.

State of Origin II got off to the most unsavoury of starts as jeers and shouts of “Queenslander” and “Gallen’s a w***er” were heard throughout the 60 seconds.

Clarke, one of Australia’s greatest distance runners and the man who lit the cauldron at the Melbourne Olympics in 1956, died Wednesday at the age of 78.

Mr Andrews said it was “appalling”.
