Yeah rugby league seems to have a small but healthy following there.
They got 7,000 turning up to watch a Canada vs USA rugby league match in Toronto recently. AFL could only dream of numbers like that for international games.

AFL don't have to go international, they're still no 1 in Australia and always will be. International thugby league remains a joke. If it wasn't for the army of braindead Aussie rednecks who watch it on TV, because they can't afford to go to games or figure out how to catch the right trains/buses to the stadiums, then international RL would be dead. Here's a point. AFL would have trouble getting proper venues outside of Australia, except maybe some cricket grounds. League is much better off because they would fit easily onto any NFL venue in the States, or any round ball venue in Europe. Just putting that into the pot.
