Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, so for you, if you see it as ugly then yes, for you it is. Me, I love the laneways, the little bars and eateries you stumble across, the sense of class the place exudes, I even like Southbank and the casino precinct. You fly into Melbourne, and even at the airport the way people are dressed, it's very cultured. The restaurants as a whole are a class above and don't cost the earth. But I also love the beaches and lay back attitude of Queensland. If I want a feel of Melbourne I thonk toowoomba comes close with its autumn leaves and climate. Or just catch a flight.

Melbourne from September through to march is a great place to be. You have the grand final, then Melbourne cup, then Christmas ... Melbourne does this so well. Then you have the tennis and Grand Prix with all the international visitors. Very cosmopolitan city. And I love the old buildings, the state library is a great visit ... A hidden gem.

Then you have Fitzroy street and Brunswick street ... And all the hip places ... Such a hip city too.

But each to their own. Always said if you could put Sydney harbour and Melbourne together you'd have the ultimate city.

Beauty has it's common traits. Melbs has done ok making a quagmire look semi decent in places but overall it's butt ugly. We all know that.

Has anyone got any history on why the place was bothered to be settled as a city?

And the best part? He thinks he's insulting US!!! :_<> :_<> :_<>

Melbs folks, it's darn right fugly. But who knows why it was settled as a city then?

I do :D
Melbourne was founded in 1835. Unlike other Australian capital cities, Melbourne did not originate under official auspices. It owes its birth to the enterprise and foresight of settlers from Tasmania, where the land available for pastoral purposes was becoming overstocked. These settlers formed the Port Phillip Association for the purpose of the pastoral exploration of Port Phillip.

Melbs! It's just as I call it. A filthy ugly shithole!!!

KE if you really think that Melb is ugly then I feel real sorry for you - plenty of parks, plenty of beaches which are accessible to all not just those East of the city - plenty of night spots and plenty of events - Sydney has to be the dirtiest, the people the most rude and offensive and the communities the most dangerous to live - you really don't know Melb very well at all!

Jesus swines when will you and the other afl turkeys get a grip on the meaning of this thread???

I'm not talking about how nice and fwendly the people are, nor am I discussing the fukking nightlife and culture.

I'm discussing, as ive already said, the aesthetic quality of the city of melb i.e. what the cbd and its surrounds looks like. gottit now? Good.

It's fukkin ugly both landscape wise and the general setup i.e. shithouse beaches, flat as a tack, southern cross station and the mammoth industrial dump outside it. It's bloody disgusting and I'm not surprised the reason it was settled as a city was simply because it was the closest place the taswegians could think of to allow their cattle to feed and take dumps on

Butt ugly. That's what it is :)

Now, lets get some more history. Does anyone know of Aboriginal inhabitation of Melbourne, a translation of what they called the place and whether they saw the place as special or had any significance whatsoever? I guess there woulda been food but very much doubt the place had sacred significance. Anyone?

Looking from the MCG through parkland to the punt rd oval, then on the left is the tennis centre precinct and AAMI park, then the CBD in the background further left. Looks fantastic if you love sport. The bay is meh from the CBD but as you travel down the bay towards Blackrock, Baumauris, Mentone area its fantastic. The eastern suburbs have so much history and are filled with parks. The Northern suburbs filled with rolling hills and gumtrees, the south by the bay. Melbourne isnt the most livable city for nothing

Don't get me wrong, you can make a dump look pretty in patches but overall it's still a dump, just like the taswegians planned it for

CNN has put Melbourne's Southern Cross Station in first spot on their list of the world’s most amazing train stations.

Based on a report from a Hamburg-based architectural data company, Southern Cross is right up there with New York’s Grand Central Station and London’s King’s Cross.

The 11 stations on the list also include the artistic Hundertwasser Bahnhof in Germany and Gare de Liege-Guillemins in Belgium.

A screen grab from the CNN website:

Southern cross station is a filthy stinking mess. Damp, dark, drab. That photo has been been photoshopped to the shithouse!

Sydney has beautiful national parks directly at its south, north and west, some of the best beaches in the world, an amazing harbour and is not as flat as a tack. It shits on melbs in terms of appearance  Just shits on it. Like the taswegians cows have for 100s of years, as they planned :(/

yeah get over the beaches, & the harbor what about the rest of the place?
its an utter shithole, designed by idiots for idiots, big nice houses on the beach beyond on that its fibro shit shacks,.

Melbourne has a bay its not a beach, if you want decent beaches take a trip down the great ocean road some of the best surfing beaches in the world

read the article about southern cross station
