Is it tough to get an afl footy contract?

Post by King-Eliagh »

Seemingly not, just saw a lil interview of Carlton player called keefe. He'd only played soccer, hadn't played a game ofarngrook before the afl came knocking and offered a contract! Jesus, seems a bit desperate to me. I knew it was thin but is the player talent THAT thin???

Dear oh dear oh me. 8-[

Yes it is. You have to be fricking fit and be able to prove it, and have all the basic skills ready to be honed up to a high level.

Way to show how fricking stupid you are, Eliagh!

Well anyone can be fit like keefe was. Skills mustn't be need to be that awesome to get into the afl. I mean it only took me a few months when I first started to get the kicks and hand balls goin pretty slick. Other than that the skills I'd developed in bball soccer and rugby put me ahead of blokes who'd been playin marngrook all their lives.

I think it wouldn't be too hard to get a crack in the afl. Look at keefe. ;)

Well keefe got offered a contract without even playing the code.

Karmicheal hunt? They say he got to u12s level before the afl snavelled him up.

Izzy folou?

Tadgh Kennelly played a similar game but it's not really the same at all. The afl gave him a run and he showed up most of the league

Josh Pyke? He never played reps or junior footy at all. Last year he taught the league how to take contested marks

And there's heaps of others too

I'm right, it's not hard to make it in the afl and get a contract if you haven't played the sport before. You just gotta be fit and sporty. :D

Just a couple of corrections Keeffe is his name and he plays for Collingwood. Solid player very tall 204cm and agile. His skills are solid as well.

The pies recruitment saw him playing when he was in year 10. At the time he had only played a hand full of games. Back in the late 2000's the club had the option to sign up a certain amount of under age kids from Qld and NSW to a scholarship program and the Pies went with Keeffe and a few others.
We signed him in 2008 and he played reserves for us in 2009. At the end of the year we rookie drafted him and he played his first senior game in 2011. He has now played a bit over 20 games. He needed about 4 years of development before he was good enough.

Well there you go eh. Thanks pies, good work there mate.

See everyone? It's really not that hard to get an afl contract. Essentially, the job description has the statement:

no experience necessary, we will train the right candidates

:(/

Now you can say that's all good and lovely but how desperate is this org? I don't know of the nrl needing to do this. I think there's just gallons of talent in the juniors making it very hard to get an nrl contract.

So folks it's case closed on this one with the following outcomes.

No, it's not hard to get an afl contract.
Yes it is much harder to get an nrl contract.

This is completely incorrect, King Eliagh, and a further demonstration that you do not understand the game. The boy had to have certain skills up to a certain level as NRLCrap1 indicated in order to even be considered. And he was recruited under a scholarship programme apparently which is not an AFL contract. Getting to the level of an AFL contract would not have been easy as a result.

Thanks phelpsy. Cracker we know they're not taking everyone that comes. I mean you gotta look fairly thin, fit snugly into a women's size 6 fluoro green bikini bottom and probably own some kind of well groomed lapdog.

But in terms of playing the game the evidence is unanimous, no experience necessary

The AFL has always said they want the best athletes - that's why there's a rookie list, international rookie list so that there is a pathway to AFL level for every success story there is also those that don't make it. Didn't the Snot Greens offer a runner from another country a contract who had never played the game - from memory he then tested positive to drugs and the offer was withdrawn.
