I guess there's no rush when you just get your supporters to pay off your debts.Demons back Jim Stynes's cause
MELBOURNE has gifted the prime space on the front of its playing jumper to the Jim Stynes-led youth charity Reach.
The club has donated the key sponsorship area to promote Reach throughout the NAB Cup.
The jumpers will be later auctioned on the club's website, with funds raised going to the program, which supports more than 57,000 Australian youths.
Stynes, the Demons legend who remains locked in a courageous cancer fight, started Reach in 1994.
He was awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia by the Queen in 2007 for his work with youth and contribution to football.
The space is available because the Dees have been unable to lock in a front-of- jumper sponsor for this season.
Melbourne chief executive Cameron Schwab said the Reach promotion would continue until the club clinched a deal with a major backer.
Schwab said the opportunity to promote Reach was in part to recognise the strong association the club had with the charity.
"We are in the midst of some pretty important discussions and negotiations with our major sponsorship and we don't want to rush those ... so we thought here is an opportunity now to celebrate the relationship between Melbourne Football Club and Reach," Schwab said.
"And so during the pre-season or until such time as the arrangement is locked away, we will have the Reach logo on the chest of the Melbourne players."
The Dees start their NAB Cup campaign tomorrow night on the Gold Coast.
Schwab said the concept was inspired by Barcelona FC's partnership with UNICEF.
The Spanish soccer club supports the charity on the front of its playing strip.
"We think AFL football can have the same sort of impact within its own community," Schwab said.
"Particularly as a one-off thing because many of the companies who support the clubs financially have important charitable links as well."

http://tensport.com.au/news/newsarticle ... AB-Cup.htmSchwab is confident the club will have a playing strip sponsor in time for the start of the season proper.
"We think we're still very much on track with our sponsorship. There's no panic stations," he said.
"We're having some really important and major discussions with our major sponsorship. We weren't prepared to compromise those at such an important time, as part of the long-term growth of the club.
"We're very confident that we can work through and get a very good outcome."
Not a problem. =D>
