The NRL aren't required to fund expansion.

We actually have people and locations that are so desperate to get an NRL team that they are willing to start their own bids and fund them.

You know all those Gold Coast Suns game that were said to be sold-out but still fell short of capacity. The reason why is because they have no corporate support.

No AFL support. No GC Suns. Local businesses and business people are just not interested.
we have 7 expressions of interest for expansion

the Central Coast of NSW , Perth Reds , Wellington NZ , PNG ,Brisbane Bombers , Ipswich , Cent QLD
we'll return to Adelaide in the next 10 years too

& as you say cooee ... all self funded
all backed by corporates so they are not a burden on the coffers of our sport

the Reason the NRL is not jumping at expansion is it requires players of a certain quality
you can't just .. start up sides .. & expect them to trott out a team of 1st grade standard ..without it impacting on the rest of the comp

this is where the AFL have F.ucked up their comp
just powered in like Bulls in a China shop ... allowing these 2 sides to rape n pillage the existing clubs with an inflated salary cap
watering the quality of the entire comp down
& turning it into the lop sided uncompetitive bucket of pooh it was in 2011... thats going to get worse in 2012
yep ..the talent pool spread way too far in the AFL

nope ... the NRL has a better attitude
we'll wait til our comp can support an extra 50 1st grade places properly ... so our comp won't loose its current eveness & quality when we do expand
in 2014/15

we'll do it right

you've been in these foreign markets , for up to 30 Years & spent a fortune on them too
If you'd had even a spattering of real success in these places .. you'd of had a far smaller bill & not required NRL players to lift the profile of these new teams
sadly the reality is .. you didn't .. & you do

in 20 years

where have I heard that before ? :-k

oh yes
30 years ago from flogball dropkicks saying it then

how'd that go for ya ?

Expansion in foreign markets is expensive. Thankfully the AFL have the funds to see it through. Their wealth is due to a combination of tv rights, attendances, memberships and sponsorship. These will ensure they have the resources to see the expansion through.

One of the main reasons the AFL expansions will work is because of the increase in ARs grass roots competitions in NSW and Qld.
http://www.sportingpulse.com/get_file.cgi?id=1623063

In 2007, 19 clubs fielded 62 teams. The Sydney AFL now boasts 22 clubs fielding 78 teams. This is a far cry from the lows of 1998 when just seven teams took the field. Where in 2007 total playing numbers were 2155, in 2011 they stand at 2914 (a 35 percent increase). The league has gone from seventeen to nineteen under-18 teams in the same time. Senior playing numbers have risen by 530 since 2008 (up 30 percent), and the under-18 teams have also risen by 114 (Up 20 percent).

RL is decades behind the AFL in expansion into foreign markets because RL grass root comps in afl states are few and far between.

These are the reasons AFL expansions will work and NRLs will struggle or fail.
how could 16 extra teams increase playing numbers by 759 ?
thats 48 players for all 16 teams
:-k

hmmmm

fudge

boy youre stupid!

Who says the new 16 teams are the only ones with the new registered players?

The new registered players would be spread over the entire league. Teams that were previously short would now be full.

It's really not hard to understand!

I'm talking about expansion beyond your heartland states. Are the NRL content to remain in QLD and NSW while the afl just move in?
we're going back to WA , & they'll be a success from day one
all these BS stories about RL failing their last time ... are just that .. BS
the Reds were victims of the super league war .. & not a failure at all as some giggleball merkins would have you believe

What corporates? Name them!

They've been talking about Gosford for years and nothing's come of it. The crowd in Perth and Adelaide was a joke and no corporates would get behind it.

So the NRL has to pitch in and promote! But they don't have the guts to do it. So much for a serious expansion!

That is not unusual at all. AFL sides have 22 players picked. A number of players would be unavailable each week due to injury or other reasons.

You bet! It would not be unusual for an AR's team to have 10-15 players in a list injured. They will always have a reserve of registered players who help fill the list in. They cant just forfeit!
